80s Pop Quiz for Millennials

Our Gen X Life | May 8, 2026

In today’s podcast, we’re joined by our daughter and son-in-law. Since they’re Millennials, we thought it would be fun to create an 80s Quiz to test their knowledge of the 1980s. We’ll quiz Calvin and Zoe in three categories: Tech, Trends, and Commercials. We won’t reveal the answers until they’ve had a chance to ponder and guess, so you can play along at home and take the challenge too. Good luck!

Considering that the oldest millennial was barely 8 years old when the 1980s came to an end or younger what the hell do you remember about the 80s little or nothing other than riding your bikes around your yard why your Mommy watch you from the kitchen window!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

What do you mean by "your dad's company"? Like, he started it or just worked for them? We had a TI computer, but only ever used it to play Othello, which came with the system. lol

We still have *69! It tells us the last number that called and you can call them back if you want! We have 811 to talk to a nurse if you're sick. I never had jellies, but I've seen them talk about it in the 80s Cruise group. I used to use Salon Selectives! I remember my nephew having a pound puppy!

I’m technically a millennial born in 1981. I’m 43 so I was born in the last year of Gen X a the first year of the millennial, so I had all of this stuff. I still grew up in the Gen X era so it’s weird to be labeled a millennial but identity more with the Gen X parents.

I remember the watchman. I miss those.
For the sodas, I like both Coke and Pepsi. It's a tie between those 2 for me.
Wendy's is my 3rd favorite restaurant.

Omg – I totally forgot about the watchman. My parents got me one for my 11th birthday. On our way home from the pizza place I tried to watch tv in the car and had the antenna out the window when my brother decided to roll up the window and accidentally snapped off the end of the antenna. I cried all the way home😂. Took it to Radio Shack and they replaced the antenna. Had so many fun memories with that thing – mostly static, but every once in a while you’d get to actually watch a show – pure magic!!!

Looks like Zoe and Calvin will definitely be prepared for the 80's Cruise!!! I know they'll love it!!! I did notice that the women and girls are wearing the crew socks with the leggings again!!! I'm also glad that Pepsi went back to their old logo too. Even though it's in a modern form. I have a few of the original Pepsi Cans when they promoted The Jackson's Victory Tour!!! Oh and have you two heard about the Totally Tubular Tour that's happening next summer? They gotta lot of 80's Stars on the tour, including some popular one hit wonders. They're making a stop in Cincy on July 27th.

I’m 25 and I got a majority of these right except for Popples, Toyota, and L’eggs. I’m a huge 80’s enthusiast so it’s not so much of a surprise for me to know most of these things. Anyway, this was a fun video and I enjoyed every minute of it!

I got a big smile when you pulled the telephone out. I was just telling my friend about jellies today. How about buster brown shoes. I got my black and white Saddle shoes there. Omg pound puppies! Come on people! I want my mtv!!! Lololololol…..

This was fun, a couple of good reminders for me too. So cool they will be joining us in 2025, they will have so much fun! Looking forward to meeting them. Also, gotta love how we’re already talking 2025 before we even sail in 2024😂😂😂

Wow, that's an amazing Pepsi Challenge!
I have always preferred Pepsi, but couldn't really point out why. But the way you guys describe it, I think it's spot on. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.
Anyway, on the Pepsi context, I think it is a weird situation here in Indonesia. A few years ago, Pepsi were no longer available in Indonesia, leading to odd situation where local KFC's, and TacoBells selling CocaCola. Like "the end" is coming, right? This was followed by FritoLay, so we no longer can buy locally-made Lay's, Cheetos, and Doritos. We kinda do, but with different brands.
Thankfully, last year the news said that Pepsi is building a plant in Indonesia, thus signalling that they are coming back. I am really looking forward to that.

Glad to say my 12 year old got about 3/4 of them right. She missed the Toyota and the phone questions. Remember when you wanted to set the clocks correctly at home and would call the operator for the time.😂. Great video as always.

x I mixed up the name Wizard (instead of Merlin, I remember that video well but mixed up the names), I couldn't remember the name Watchman (though I have heard that before), I couldn't remember the name Popples (though I remember the toy from one of y'alls video), did not remember the commercial for L'eggs (L'eggs are so unique that it would be hard to forget that item) and I did not remember the Toyota commercial (though I am a hardcore Toyota fan, have a Toyota Tundra right now), but I was right on everything else!
x I love KangaRoos, I used to have them when I was younger and am always looking to find an ideal pair (hard to find)
x I will admit, the not knowing what brand makes Chuck Taylor shoes was shocking, they have a VERY long history and are everywhere for popular culture.
o Actually I wear a Gen X outfit comprised of MTV shirt, levi's jeans, and Chuck Taylor shoes, Gen X'ers love it!

This was so fun! I knew the first one. I know we owned the second one, but I could not remember the name for anything. Or how you played it. I do remember how the buttons felt.
Aw, man, I miss old phones, especially rotary ones. If I could fine one for cheap at a thrift store, I would get it. I miss the sound of that dial.

Hold up, I don't remember the Watchman at all!
Wow, I saw & sang the L'eggs commercials all the time. (And bought them.) But I never made the "eggs" / "L'eggs" connection until now.
I love that they were willing to do this with you. And that they're going with you on the cruise! That is so sweet.
