"how much should I spend on a phone" in reality I think best falls somewhere between $70 and $700. A lot of good options fall in the $250-500 range where you'll get many flagship features still. Sometimes the frame will be plastic but that's not always bad as there are some really durable plastics out there like polycarbonate.
