Saw this vid in my recommendations while procrastinating on my essay.
Ironically, my immediate reaction was to save it to watch later. 😂

Fuck…I watch this instead of studying. Is searching for a way to stop procrastinating considered procrastinating?

something that helps me is actually allowing myself time (when appropriate) to relax, do something I enjoy that is frivolous or "not productive" and just take it easy for a while (a few hours, a whole day, a weekend, whatever). I have a lot of anxiety and mental pressure around being productive, and almost invariably that pressure and anxiety builds up to ultimately keep me from being very productive at all. Allowing myself some free time that is SPECIFICALLY free time, and not just procrastination time while I am avoiding doing allll the other things I need to do, is really freeing and helpful.

read a book to help with procrastination, one method that stood out to me was planning: if you write out what you have to do that will make it seem less daunting and youll be more likely to start it

Thanks man. I'm just awful when it comes to staying on task and unfortunately, I'll probably continue to do so but nonetheless, your videos are very understanding and helpful

I get what you mean about when you sit at your desk and you just associate it with video games…. for me, getting DRESSED! I used to think I'd do at-home tasks (cleaning or whatever) in my pajamas… NO! I will half ass it or I just won't do it. I must get dressed. Another thing that helps me is I ask my person, "what kind of person do you want to be? Do you want to be lazy or do you want to be the type of person that other people admire?" and so I aspire to be a good, hard-working person. The kind of person I want my husband and future children to be 🙂

I think my problem is I often illude myself into thinking that I'll have plenty of (or at least enough) time to do some tasks later, when I actually don't. It's plain dumb and I don't know why I do it so much.

it really helps when i make a list, outlining how long i am going to work on said task and what time it would be when that amount of time has elapsed.

This is my all time favorite post about procrastination: http://waitbutwhy.com/2013/10/why-procrastinators-procrastinate.html. There's a great follow up as well! I find for me that invoking the "panic monster" by creating urgency has a great effect. For example, I reduced my "day job" hours to focus on my business, and as my savings runs out, it's pushed me to be super productive the last month or so.

The "walking away from your procrastination space"/walking into another room thing really helps 🙂 You might want to divide your room in some way, with a curtain or something.
One thing that works for me, although it may sound a little esoteric, is the following: every time you do complete a task, take a minute or so to be very aware of the feeling that gives you and to let the feeling sink in. It works especially good in cases where you've been procrastinating.
For instance, if you FINALLY got around to cleaning out your wardrobe, take some time to enjoy the look of it and the space it gave you, and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment. Try to really internalize that feeling. Use that as a positive reminder when you find yourself procrastinating again.
It also works fabulously with exercise! Remember how you felt the last time you had good workout – yeah, sweaty, tired, but also energized, powerful, fulfilled, you name it.

I think you shouldn't fight battles you don't have to. I used to never jog or walk or do any exercise outside because I live in a really warm city. It's also somewhat dangerous, so I couldn't even listen to music on the go. Obviously I would always avoid doing it until I remembered that gyms have treadmills. I found it ten times more pleasant to run in a place with air conditioning and no sun or danger. And since I was paying for it and was already there, I started doing some other workouts as well.
Things like doing the dishes are much easier if you listen to some good music while doing it, and learning to play an instrument can be much more pleasant if you try learning some songs you enjoy instead of just repeating exercises. Try looking at things from a different angle so that, if possible, you won't even have to resource to willpower or discipline.

How did I just find your channel? haha. It helps to learn how to take the pressure off of yourself as well. Particularly if you are procrastinating on things nobody is forcing you to do, which is basically any goal related to self-improvement.

I definitely wonder if standing up puts people in a more focused and work oriented mood. I used to stand at my desk, unfortunately about a year ago I got a hernia and I have not been able to get any sort of healthcare insurance or coverage. So now I sit on my ass because I can't stand up for too long with out my hernia beginning to hurt (and get ever so slightly bigger).
As for a different environment for work, I absolutely agree. I know that where my desktop resides its nigh impossible to concentrate and get work done. So I'm going to get a laptop soon dedicated to work and I'm probably going to take it to the library or a coffee shop or something to that effect to get work done.

Just tell yourself: "If I won't do it nobody will". And if it is a hard thing that takes a lot of time, remember that their is no gain without pain, and that when you reach the top will it all be worth it.

Generally, telling myself that I'm going to do something for only 5 or 10 minutes, will encourage me to be more likely to do it, because I can get back to goofing off right away. What ends up happening is that I stay on the task much longer than that. If it's small enough, I'll probably finish it. If not, I'm likely to have made a nice dent in the task.
It's also nice that anytime after the original set time has passed, I know I can stop at any moment. But by that point it's something I WANT to get done, and not a huge, ominous chore. I do take advantage of that rule if I really don't have the energy or time to finish the task, but I've certainly gotten a lot more done than I thought I would by the time I stop.

Diwnload productivity apps if you have a smartphone, or computer. I really like to use a combination of Todoist and google caldendar or apps that allow me to make a check list, because just the feeling of checking something off feels really good. But Todoist has levels which also keep me motivated. Google calendar just helps with giving me a visual of what I need to do, because in the widget you can set colors and stuff and it just shows me "look this isn't as over whelming, look how small the green block/list is". Alternatively, you can hand write the list, which can feel more rewarding when you check it off and possibly help with training you to makes lits and do things.
I'm also a freelancer, so I recently started using apps that track the amount of time I use. So hopefully it'll help. I personally tend to procrastinate things that might take a long time. But seeing the numbers on how much time I acually use give me an idea of "hey, it wasn't as long as I thought" and if it did take me long, I can work on adjusting my times goal next time around. (Hint hint: new challenge)
For certain tasks like cleaning, sometimes a motivator is redecorating. Like if you want to redecorate you room and you can, just simply moving furniture can help. I motivates me because I get the reward of having a new loom to my room and I can get creative with whatever I decide to move or not. The same goes for throwing old things away, I like the reward of "seeming" to have more space than I actually have… (Or when cleaning the pantry it means I get to stock more delicious food heheh).

I'm big on trying to pause. Like, when I finish an episode of The Gilmore Girls, I want to keep watching until netflix asks me if everything is all right, but instead I take time to stop it before it keeps going, do one of the tasks I tell myself I have to do, then watch another episode, and then eventually all of the laundry will be done and I won't have the shame of the Netflix question.

the moment I put something on a to do list, i will for sure not do it within the next week…or two…or three…so i try to avoid to do lists physical or mental. I work better on just randomly doing things that just offer themselves to be done in the moment.

When you said "Willpower" all I could think about was Green Lanterns. Especially because you have a green t-shirt on.
