Society has had religion at the core of its values for thousands of years, when is this purification going to take place that leaves us with Neil's utopian vision of it?

Hard disagree on the premise that religion is a pretty good thing. As a woman. As a community minded person. It’s been leveraged for power & domination every time. I have no faith that humans can handle it.

Religion, including Catholicism, is you have to believe me about what an imaginary authority said over your own experience or the evidence tells you. Great soil for MAGA to grow in.
Community is great. Sometimes we need hierarchy to get things done. But religion is fundamentally irrefutable.

I found the following book by Jonathan Haidt very helpful in explaining why people get so emotional about politics and religion. The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion

Brennan has hang ups with Catholicism because he has , what bishop Sheen called misplaced sympathy. Everything he wants to exclude has been put into place after thousands of years of scholarly debate . For example, he can find out why women aren’t ordained in a 2 second search. Or statistics about homosexuality in the priesthood. But he won’t.

Neal Brennan is the ultimate example of someone who operates on street smarts alone and has no desire to go beyond that. Like, some of the things he muses on as if he's unpacking unknowable mysteries could be learned about if he just read a book on the subject. It's always funny when his guests try to bring in some of that knowledge and he is like "well, maybe, but that's just your opinion, man" before going on about something (MLK, Quakers, etc.) he knows nothing about while also finding a way to (out of nowhere) sneak in his grievances with the online left.

I don’t think people need religion to understand ethics. These tracks are built off fairy tales, stoicism worships no one and instills good values to live by.

The only guardrail that christianity gives is a fear of hell and the devil. I grew up in it and there was no hope of heaven, just fear. They just talk about the afterlife and there's no gratification in real life to do anything good. There's no incentive to actually be good to your neighbors when you can justify the best or worst action to avoid going to hell. The "tracks" we need now is secular lessons in morality that show the instant consequences of what will happen if you're an asshole, and then the instant gratification of being a kind person. If schools took just an hour every week to have those lessons, we would see a huge shift in society and politics instantly.

Fun fact about can't kink shame. MAGA fucking hates it when you're a straight sadist guy. They have fantasies of domination through fear and cruelty. Respect and empathy actually working to get all the shit they want drives them nuts.

This is a classic example of a progressive liberal whose whole personality has become political. This is exactly why the progressive left is fighting like their lives depend on it. In reality, they have lost their way so badly that politics have taken over their lives. Dumb as hell!!

If you think religion and the moral framework it provides can be beneficial, it is, but, imagine the benefits of actually recognizing that you are a child of God and living accordingly, in God's power.
Religion never saved anyone. Being one with God, choosing to receive, be filled and overflow with God's love, is salvation.
God is in control. Authorities, whether they intend to do God's will or not, are bound by God and His good will, in this fallen world.
God can use the evil we do for good, but how much better to choose to do the good the God commands and which God would gladly empower you to do?
"For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

Those who cannot accept the absurdity of life find refuge in conspiracy theories and supernatural explanations. They latch onto these security blankets to the point that they forget that they are just blankets and believe that they are invincible armor. They reject fallibility and therefore humanity. Atrocities follow. Infallibility is more deadly than fentanyl. Of course, I could be wrong. 😉

Institutions didn't appreciate the respect they were getting and stopped policing themselves, so human vices infiltrated and corruption degraded our opinion. The various churches, boy scouts, politicians…

Imagine having Ned Flanders as a neighbor . Never have to worry about him stealing your s**t or talking trash about you and your family .
Would literally jump into a burning building to save you , twice . Never trying to bang your wife or get you fired because he wants your job .
If everyone looks out for everyone else's best interest then everybody wins . All of the people aren't a problem but some of the people are always a problem . And those people are "conservatives" 100% of the time . No matter the race creed or color conservatism is a mental illness.

Humanity should have discarded these ancient myths and superstitions a long time ago. It's sad that in 2026 people need a fairy tale to keep them in check.
