Why Is Beef So Expensive? (It’s Not The Cattle)

I Know Morgan wont prob see this but,I only buy grass fed meat…organic! you are what you eat. And I do not want to eat meat from a confined animal that hasn't even walked a pasture and had a good life. I'm still rooting for Sly thou he is special I think! Go Sly! Screw dicks beef i only buy american. Dick gave us beef that we dont know how its grown out of a country thats known for beef born illness. Let it rot…

I appreciate your perspective, but I will disagree with a few points. the feeder calf price has sky rocketed, the slaughter beef hasnt changed nearly as much. this stems from a few years ago there was a bit of a drought, many farmers/ranchers thought they would get a 3rd cut of grass in. there were literal lines at the sale barns. That should have completely collapsed the beef prices, but it didnt > thats where the processors and supply chain made a good margin. Well as you said it take 18 to 24 months for the BEEF dump to become a supply shortage. There arent enough calves to replace what was sold, so calf prices go up, once the prices start to rise, EVERYONE starts selling again.

The fact that the calf price is skyrocket means the ranchers are getting that money, not the processors. for every 1000lbs of animal on the hoof 40% is beef, (way less for grass fed grass finished btw) so a 2.00 a lbs live weigh slaughter animal means the meat value of that animal is (1000×2 = 2000 /400 = 5.00 dollars a pound . the current whole animal price per lbs for big box store beef is 8.00 to 9.00 per pound. so that 3.00 goes to the processor distributor and retailer, and 5.00 to the rancher….. converting that into percentages, 62.5% to rancher and 37.5% to the rest… I watch the auction reports, it is just math.. Yes there are very few ultra large processors out there, but 4 is not 1 and monopoly is 1, if they collude to price fix well thats illegal and the regulators watch for that, so they indirectly price fix, but if prices go up too much sales goes down, and they are stuck with inventory. that inventory does last for ever.

if they decide to slow down to tighten supply, then the incoming animal supply grows, and they still have to feed them which is costs, so that "extra money" is literally eaten and turned to poo.

yes we have fewer head than ever, but the heads we have are much larger than before, so the weight of beef is down, but not by as much as some thing, people are also eating much more other protein than they have, and for many red meat is evil.

the current price hike is a compound issue, but the rancher isnt innocent, but hes not the only one to blame.
If everyone is driving prices up, what is he supposed to do, NOT sell his beef because the price is artifically high because of a panic 2 years ago??

I’m happy I’m lucking enough to buy beef from a local farm 25 minutes away and get it processed at a local butcher even closer. Just got my 300 pound half beef this week for about 5 a pound after paying the farm and the butcher. It’s the one meat I don’t do myself yet.

Beef isn't the only thing that seems expensive. That was some interesting information, I think that you've made good points about this. The cows seem happy.

I don't buy anymore meat from any gtocery store. Buy from farm instead. Their prices are just as expensive, but I'd rather buy local farm wuth meat grown on farm tgen imported from a country meat not inspected.
