TERMS OF CALLING THE VOICEMAIL:
By calling or texting this number, you agree to allow me to record your voicemail and use the recordings and texts for personal and commercial use. I agree, however, not to give or sell any of your information to any parties unafilliated with video production on this channel.
1. No one will ever answer this number, it should always go straight to voicemail, so don’t expect to talk to a human.
2. It is very, very, unlikely that anyone will call or text you back. If you get a response, it will be in a public way, such as when part of a video.
3. There’s a caller ID, so I will generally be able to see the number you called from. As mentioned above, none of this information will be shared or used, but if that makes you uncomfortable then I suggest not calling. I also suggest that you do not share any unecessary personal information.
4. Your basic rates and charges for calls, whatever they may be, will still apply.
5. Your voicemail might be used for or responded to in a future video!

For me, what makes the sketch funny is the reaction of the couple because it was what we we're all thinking.

The sketch is very aware of itself, and that self-awareness allows us to laugh with the sketch about its ridiculous randomness.

I think the context of the period can help to understand but usually I find impossible to find a single reason. Many things are successful by accident, reasons that can be fully impossible to understand even to Tom Hanks himself.
Maybe success is just that. Random.
And trying to reverse engineer to happen again never fully works.
I like the sketch but I am of the same opinion of "but why all this?"

One of the great things about the David Pumpkins sketch is that it's one of the few SNL skits that legitimately has a beginning, middle and proper payoff ending. Most SNL skits just wind up fizzling out because it's clear the writers had a great idea, but no idea what to do with it.

I loved the "any questions" because there are so many questions. There is no explanation in the moment. It doesn't make sense until he jump scares them. It's psychological confusion and utter frustration until he appears between them.

I think what made this funny was it was a premise for a legitimate scare. I hate to describe modern society as desensitized to horror, but it is valid that modern haunted houses are either having to go more extreme, or often have a hard time scaring many guests. The 100 Floors of Frights concept wouldn't actually frighten most people. But, confusing the rider with something bizarre, leaving them frustrated and bewildered, to then have that one thing you just don't understand suddenly come back to startle you out of nowhere does seem like a short lived, but legitimate fright. We always say that what people fear worst is the unknown. Maybe SNL was actually on to something.

We don’t get SNL in my country but tons of people know about it. I only heard of David S Pumpkins in the last week or so and had a look. I don’t get it. I love Tom Hanks but the character wasn’t funny. It looks like people are just clinging onto stuff that’s not funny to make themselves feel relevant by being up on the latest trend. Weird.

I have been asking this question ever since I saw this sketch. It makes me feel better to know Tom Hanks didn't get it either. It's cute but not "van down by the river" memorable.

David S. Pumpkins was a man of his word. At the beginning, he told them "I'm going to scare the hell out of you." Didn't matter that they didn't know who he was, because at the end, that's exactly what he did.
