I feel like jumpscares are a quick, easy way to give you a scare, but ambiguity sticks with you a lot more. I was about 13 when I watched Insidious, and at the time, it was my first horror movie, so I was definitely affected by the jumpscares and the monsters in the movie. I was scared for a few days, but I wouldn't say it was a very memorable film.
I watched The Shining by Kubrick a year ago, and the only direct threat in the movie was Jack Torrence chasing his wife and son with an axe, but it was the subtlety of the hotel and the weirdness of the things inside it that makes the film such an impactful one for me. Granted, I watched The Shining just last year and Insidious ten years ago, so The Shining is more fresh in my memory, but with jumpscare movies, it's scary while watching and maybe a little after, but I find that they're quickly forgotten, but with uncanny horror/terror, it stays with you longer.

The first thing I remember creeping me out was an adult swim clip that was Tara the Android singing over a video of someone reanimating a raw chicken wing. Watching the raw chicken wing twitch and writhe as Tara's monotone voice sung about the joys of life screwed me up.
