Hello folks! Today we’re talking about one of the most obnoxious, disgraceful series in music history. The “Punk Goes ___” albums are (mostly) annoying pop-punk bands covering everything from metal, to pop, to … crunk? Not really crunk, but that’s what they call it. From Hey Ya to Baby One More Time, Rihanna to Ozzy, and everything in between…here is..this.

Not gonna lie, I low key miss this series. All Time Low’s “Umbrella”, ADTR’s “Since U Been Gone” and “Cable Car (Over My Head)”, A Static Lullaby’s “Toxic” and a few others were great covers. I even liked Escape The Fate’s “Smooth” cover but that might just be me having bad taste lol. Can’t forget TDWP’s “Still Fly”, that track was just a straightup banger.

I’ve always been a sucker for all “Hot Topic angsty 2000s kid” music though. “Punk Goes Crunk” title always bugged me though lmao.

Lmfao 🤣 I remember seeing these cd 💿 albums and hearing some of these songs. What the hell were they thinking? They weren’t 😂. I was like I’d rather listen to kidz bop than listen to that other crap.

My teacher once told me that music is what you like it to be.
Why hate on these when clearly a lot of people like them. If you don't like it, then move on. You like the original one? then listen to it. No one's forcing you to listen to the covers. It's not like you're the target audience for these album anyways.

And btw, these are some of the best cover songs out there

    Runaway by Silverstein
Hit Me Baby One More Time and Wrecking Ball by August Burns Red
Tik Tok and Hot N' Cold by Woe Is Me
    Smooth by Escape the Fate
    Toxic by Static Lullaby
    Billie Jean by Breathe Carolina
Rolling in the Deep by Go Radio
Turn Down for What by Upon a Burning Body
Love the Way You Lie by A Skylit Drive

I feel like the only punk goes pop cover I like is the cab’s cover of disturbia since the style of the original song works for something heavier like rock also unlike something like the ain’t it fun cover in v4 if I recall it’s using the punk and rock genre to add on to the original not just cover it. Also because the cab is actually a band that can do multiple genres well so it felt natural for doing a cover on a song like disturbia by Rihanna

I don't know how much this applies to "Punk Goes Pop", but someone pointed out that a lot of the YouTube "pop but metal" covers don't do the songs justice because the people making them don't enjoy the songs they're covering.

Similar to a cynical remake of a classic movie, they're just going through the motions. The whole appeal is just there in the title – it's a gimmick. It's just meant to make you giggle and go "that's not what that's supposed to sound like".

There is a LOT of garbage in these compilations, don't get me wrong, but there are def more gems than you'd be lead to believe in this vid if you like this sorta sound. Tonight Alive's "Little Lion Man", Mayday Parade's "Somebody That I Used To Know", AFI's "My Michelle" and A Static Lullaby's "Toxic" are big highlights that deserved a mention imo!! We all know the crunk album is garbage, I don't think it's anyone's favourite, but there are gen some cool takes on these songs here!

The Devil Wears Prada were the only band to understand the assignment. Their version remains on my covers playlists.

Also all love and praise to manny fresh for producing the fuck out of the original Still Fly. The arrangement lent itself to a good cover. It's made up of so many great parts. Perfect for translation.

I know that a lot of people dislike it, Don Henley included, but I will defend the Ataris' cover of "The Boys of Summer" until my dying days. Unfortunately, pop punk covers like that seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

the fact that you didnt bring up the cover of Baby I got your money by say anything, which along with Still Fly, was my favourite track on this mess of a comp. Max Bemis is taking the piss the entire time and its all the better for it. Nobody needed more earnest emo boy rapping.

Dr. Demento did a version of this with an album called "Covered in Punk." But, unlike the examples in the video; "Covered in Punk" is quite excellent. The highlight for me is Shonen Knife's cover of "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Eat It." Super fun!
