What Happened to the Crew of This Train? | Last Moments

This decades old picture remains intensely creepy but the reality was much worse than even the grim image suggests.
“A boiler explosion is a catastrophic failure of a boiler. There are two types of boiler explosions. One type is a failure of the pressure parts of the steam and water sides. There can be many different causes, such as failure of the safety valve, corrosion of critical parts of the boiler, or low water level. Corrosion along the edges of lap joints was a common cause of early boiler explosions.
The second kind is a fuel/air explosion in the furnace, which would more properly be termed a firebox explosion. Firebox explosions in solid-fuel-fired boilers are rare, but firebox explosions in gas or oil-fired boilers are still a potential hazard.”

This event occurred in 1948, not 1943 as I state in the video. Sorry for the mistake.

What a horrific way for those 3 crew members to die.
Being scalded with massive burns across most of your body by unfathomably hot steam, only to survive and spend days in agony, before finally, mercifully, dying.

My relative Wallace Goldsberry was the first person in Chillicothe Ohio to own an airplane and the first to die in a plane crash as well. Wally was smoking that Dayton heirloom.

Something similar happened in germany in 1977 in Bitterfeld. The crew ran out of water and when they got new water they made the mistake and put massive amounts of cold water onto the overheated Lokomotive. The water explosively expanded blowing the whole Lokomotive apart and sending the boiler flying.

My grandfather worked construction and he tells me about how he had this one job underground around superheated steam pipes. It was Very hot down there, With ventilation it was over 130F and everyone walked with sticks in front of them like they were blind because if any of the pipes developed a crack the steam came out so fast it would mangle the stick and give warning to whoever might be holding it before they themselves got blasted.

Ok. I think I already knew the answer to the water diamond paradox. But it’s even more obvious now. You don’t just need water for drinking or even swimming/bathing. If they had put water in this steam engine, it would have saved their lives. And kept them from serious burns and injuries.
If you have the chance to pick water, always pick water.

This would've happened to Thomas the Tank Engine if they hadn't fished out all the fish inside his boiler and made a lovely picnic supper of fish and chips

I remember something about the development of steamships being the equipping of bigger and more powerful pressure bombs in boats, but I can't remember the exact quote.
