U.S. Girls Announces New Album Scratch It, Unveils Epic 12-Minute Single “Bookends”

Toronto’s eclectic songsmith Meg Remy, operating under the moniker U.S. Girls, is back on the scene with exhilarating news: her forthcoming album Scratch It is set for release on June 20 via 4AD. This marks her first full-length release since 2023’s Bless This Mess, and fans can hardly contain their excitement, especially with the unveiling of the album’s lead single, “Bookends,” a sprawling, emotional tribute to the late Power Trip frontman, Riley Gale.

Crafted in the heart of Nashville, Scratch It showcases Remy’s artistic evolution. Collaborating with a brand new band, she recorded the album live-off-the-floor, ensuring a raw, intimate feel that encapsulates a cocktail of genres—from country and gospel to garage rock, soul, and disco. This dynamic approach aims to capture the vibrant essence of the moment, distilling each track into an immersive listening experience.

At over 12 minutes, “Bookends” unfolds at a deliberate, waltzing pace, exploring themes of existence, grief, and mortality through a lens inspired by John Carey’s Eyewitness To History. In a striking shift roughly eight minutes in, the song pivots from somber reflection to a more celebratory tone, signaling a cathartic release that echoes Gale’s spirit. Accompanied by a surreal, ’60s-inspired video, “Bookends” invites listeners to journey through a kaleidoscope of emotions.

Alongside this musical revelation, Remy has also announced a North American tour to support Scratch It. Kicking off with a show in Nashville on May 14, the tour will traverse cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York, wrapping up with California dates in September. The full list of tour dates is available on U.S. Girls’ official website, with tickets for all ten shows currently on sale.

With its multifaceted sounds and poignant subject matter, Scratch It promises to be a standout entry in U.S. Girls’ discography. Prepare for a blend of intimacy and exuberance that only Meg Remy can deliver.
