I didn't get my deposit back for 9 months, because my 0 looked a bit like a 9 on the form. They didn't bother to tell me, they just put the file in the bottom of the pile.

Never expect the deposit back in full (if at all). It's just a way for a landlord to charge one month's extra rent and to minimize the impact of vacancy on their balance sheet.

This is depressingly true. I got dinged once for forgetting to clean the dead moths out of the porch light, after hiring a cleaner and making a good-faith effort to leave the place sparkling.

Pro tip, ask for a new fridge ASAP (when you first move in), then a new oven, then a new shower etc…you get it back in appliances.

Half my deposit was taken away to repair a door. On the second floor. Which literally was never used. No really, the door led nowhere. If you used that door you would fall out of the house to your death.
