'The Coral Reef'
Come with me on a dive,
See the coral beneath us? It is alive.
Those are not rocks or plants you see,
They're animals in the Cnidaria family.
This family include sea anemones,
And all the jellyfish roaming the seas.
But coral polyps have a unique trait,
They produce exoskeletons of calcium carbonate.
Exoskeleton build up is how reefs begin,
And the coral polyps reside within.
Algea partners with coral for a place to stay,
Algea feeds the coral in a symbiotic way.

On Earth's surface there's only 1% where,
Coral reefs occur they're unique and rare.
But as you look at the reef you will see,
It's home to 25% of life in the sea.
The reef is the home of invertebrates,
Crabs, lobsters, and sea horse mates,
Octopus and fish call the reef home,
And the reef lagoon is where sea turtles roam.
On the coral reef sharks and rays depend,
If they lose their reef home their lives will end.

Earth's reefs are threatened by actions of man,
We must protect them we must make a plan.
You may look at me in disbelief,
When I tell you most sunscreen is killing the reef.
If you use sunscreen when you're in the sun,
Make sure it's reef safe or damage will be done.
Let's end overfishing and stop polluting,
And all people must stop disputing,
Ocean acidification because we are aware,
It's caused by the greenhouse gas in the air.
We caused the increase in gases it's true,
And if we don't admit it the reef's time is through.

Whether it's fringe, barrier, or atoll,
Protecting Earth's reefs should be our common goal.
Because without reefs the sea cannot thrive,
They keep 25% of sea creatures alive.
And the health of mankind depends of the sea,
All life on Earth needs reefs to be healthy,
If we protect coral reefs they'll thrive and grow too,
Together we can save the reefs, me and you.

for 500 million years coral has been around. Coral has survived every mass extinction that has ever occurred since life became multicellular and withstood some of the most cataclysmic changes of Earth's environment in history. I kinda get the feeling that Coral isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
