Tim Scott and the “token black guy”

Garrison Hayes | September 28, 2024

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) recently announced that he is running for president. As the only Black senator in the Republican caucus, Scott plays a unique role in American politics. Especially when it comes to issues of race. So in this video, I want to blend a little media analysis with some political analysis. This video essays spans from American cinema to American economic policy.

For me, this is the beginning of a conversation I’ve been wanting to have for a while now. It isn’t exhaustive, and I’m processing.

I’ll be hanging out in the comment section to hear your thoughts as well!

Many of the black republicans are out for themselves. They don't care about the collective, only what they can get for themselves. As long as they are "successful" they continue to profess that America isn't racist. They have no shame!

I think you need to do a deeper dive into who Tim Scott is. His role in helping bi-partisan legislation get passed such as the first step act, how he has successfully encouraged republicans members of congress to diversify their staff, or most importantly and I’m shocked this wasn’t included his famous speech talking about how as a sitting senator he was pulled over for driving while black and during the peak of the BLM movement he put forth legislation that included 80% of what the democrats had proposed that would have gotten passed but only for got shut down because “it didn’t do enough”. Leading to nothing getting passed in the end. One community can’t be married to one party. You need to work with both if you want to see progress made. You may disagree with Tim Scott philosophically but has consistently proven through his actions not words that he tries to work to the benefit of the Black community and the US as a whole. If you want to make analysis of whether he succeeds or not fine. But the first half of the video was unnecessary and just selling a narrative that hurts in the long run. Labeling Tim Scott a Token, Uncle Tom, or Magical Nero just hurts the Black Community in the long run. You can disagree with him, not agree with his philosophy, but he’s your ally for getting bi-partisan legislation passed not your enemy. You need the right wing too.

I understand. The movies. It's too bad an black individual can't save no one because they are a human being, but with the destruction of people I don't think anyone will understand that black intelligence can make you pick to save someone because they are a human being not because they are white or any race for that case. Understandably, with oppression getting in the way of true intelligence, only an individual can express. No one can dictate or narrate your story if, for example, if oppression got in the way. History is important

As long as black people and poor people can be kept at bay for a few more years the system is working as planned. The goal is to replace human labor then eliminate poor and minority people. We are already doing it with robots. Tim Scott works for this same goal. He is sacrificing himself for this goal because he is in the closet and hates himself because he has been taught to hate himself. He sees himself as a sacrificial lamb.

This is called Meritorious Manumission..I learned this term years ago from Dr Claude Anderson.
These were slave Codes out of Virginia but spread.
A Slave could be freed or rewarded some type of accolade if:

    1.They save a White Person's life

2.They invent something that is useful to the Master

3.They inform the Master of an impending Slave Rebellion.

THese " Slave Codes" Manifest in Movies and Snitch Culture.

What I don't like about your analysis of 'The Defiant Ones' is you leave out the part where Tony Curtis's character goes back to save Poitier's character after the woman they encounter give him directions to get lost in the swamp.

However, if it's a black main character and a white person helps them then it's white savior complex. Right? So what you're really saying is that integration in movies is bad. This is not a facetious comment, if you have a white main character with black side characters people claim magical negro. If you have black main characters and white side characters people, claim white savior complex. What is the solution? I did not engage with the rest of your video because the first two minutes were so ridiculous.

Since when did one's personal success refute the reality of systemic, racial discrimination in America? So, is Tim Scott basically saying: "I don't suffer from cancer, therefore there's no cancer in the world?" Embarrassing!

If the viewer isn't careful they might come to a different conclusion then the conclusion I want you to make. It couldn't possibly be nuanced, but it must be my own personal film critic that is the one true meaning. So let me shoehorn some things together to create engagement to my video. We all know what Tim Scott is, no need to slander the late Sidney Poitier with your hateful reaction.

Thank you for this video. I'm white, middle aged, southern, living in Texas. "The magical negro" concept is spot on. I have maintained blindness of this, never actually considering the concept/character. I believe a similar concept can be applied to tribal people throughout the Americas. You may have read Sherman Alexie. It came to my mind that this magical character might have roots in minstrel shows. My mind is now a whirlwind of thoughts of what I have blindly accepted that actually was this sort of character. I really appreciate your knowledge & humane logic.

I think the Green Mile more so shows the injustice of a racist system that would kill a black man that is not only an upstanding citizen, but that they know is innocent. And that the complicit white guards are helpless to stop the system even if they wanted to. I think it's a display of how rotten to the core the system truly is. I don't think necessarily it's a black guy taking on the troubles of white people lol. I think it makes white people look worse not better. So I think possibly your criticism is undue at least partially.
