The one thing I did love from the movie was the classic Disney animation that you don't see much anymore, or didn't see much at the time this movie came out. I understand it's so much more work to do animated verses cg.. but damn that classic animation looks so good and brings me back to being a little kid and watching Aladdin and lion king.

I feel like The Princess and the Frog was "Almost There" in terms of a good moral, but it just missed the mark.
So Tiana has this internal conflict of overworking herself with no breaks. Cool. But Mama Odie's advice is to fall in love and be a family-oriented person like her daddy. And that's where the movie lost me. Tiana needs to treat herself right first, before she and Naveen live happily ever after. She needs a work-life balance.
I think Tiana and Naveen could have bonded over isolation. Tiana's relationships are suffering because "All you ever do is work!" The people around Naveen aren't honest with him. Lawrence is violently jealous of him, his parents never disciplined him until he became a financial burden, and Lottie developed a parasocial romantic relationship with him because of his royal title. They're both incredibly alone because of the self-sabotaging mistakes they've made in different directions. In that context, Louis and Ray matter so much; they're the first genuine friends Tiana and Naveen have had in a long time (in Naveen's case, ever).

Disney could have had mufaro's beautiful daughters. With a few tweaks it is the perfect disney princess story. I get it is not a classic story and therefore not public domain but it was right there

I like your analysis of the movie. The Black princess is gonna get younger me every time but being older, I know my girl Tiana deserved much better. I still love her but she deserves the world!

He’s just a silly gator who just wanted to do what he wanted and he finally did.

Idk. Im just some white girl but this has always been my favorite disney movie, and Tiana is my favorite disney princess out of any of them. I saw it as celebrating her hard work while also sorta calling for people to make time for themselves. I grew up kinda poor with rich friends so I got to experience that. Tiana was hard working, smart, she obviously didnt want to be a frog it was just a twist on a classic fairytale trope, I love voodoo/hoodoo. I think the movie was epic but again what do I know.

Ahh, you made lots of fun and great points! As a former chef from Louisiana, Tiana's story made me a bit sad. Owning a busy fine-dining restaurant during those times didn't seem like a happily ever after. But my toddlers love this movie and I love the songs. Hopefully the show will give her more dimensions besides being a hardworker stuck in Maldonia while struggling with life in royalty. I found most of the accents hard to enjoy, though Ray's was not very genuine either, it reminded me of some cajun folks in my family. Off topic- Our library had a quiz board where all kids put a sticker voting for their favorite princess. Elsa and Ariel had the most stickers, then came Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Tiana, and Mulan, while Ana came in last with only a few stickers. It was pretty interesting to see their opinions.

It is true that every other Disney character got either cute or cool sidekicks Aladdin got the genie and abu,mulan got mushu and cricky,Belle got talking objects like lumiere and cogsworth,Elsa and Anna got Olaf a cute talking marketable snowman,Moana had Maui who was like her mentor and she got hay hay the chicken who’s marketable cuz I’ve seen toys of him at the store,Pocahontas got meko and flit two cute sidekicks then Tiana got Louis and ray an alligator and a bug which are not marketable to make as toys or figures and people would not find them cute or cool even aurora and Snow White got cute animal forest friends.

I only watched it once, a long time ago, but Princess and the Frog left me feeling similar to Sleeping Beauty. I liked it until the thing in the title happened. As soon as she turned into a frog I felt like I was watching a different, much worse movie.

I've seen this movie several times and as much as I love Tiana as a character (like damn, she's hot and has the singing vocals to boot), I feel like after the first half, she's kind of there for the ride. Like, I love the scenes where she stands up for herself and doesn’t take Naveen's crap, but the movie is still mostly about him. Almost like Disney wanted to write a black princess movie, but cowered at the last second and wrote in Naveen to essentially hijack the rest of it. Like, he's likeable and does develop, but it was meant to be Tiana's story, and instead, well… it doesn’t feel like it at points.
I never had an issue with them turning into frogs since it plays into the mystical feel of other disney movies. But I can see why other people, especially black people, would find it off-putting, unnecessary and offensive. (I, uh… might have a thing for anthro female frogs now though. So, thanks for that, Tiana. Lol)
The message is kind of a mess and the movie could've been better in some areas. But I'm happy to see her restaurant open at the end, and to see those racist bank-tellers get their comeuppances.
I did feel bad for Lawrence but he had it coming. Dr. Facilier has more than earned his position in the official disney lineup though, and I'm glad to see his voice talent be lent to Husk the bartender (Pretty much Facilier's catsona, minus the voodoo, top hat and blood-sucking talismans. Lol)

Speaking as a Cajun, Ray felt like much better representation than what we got out of "Water Boy".
This movie really shows that if you've going to do a story that represents a culture or backgriund, maybe have someone from there actually on the creative team to give feedback, because it was tone deaf in its execution.
