The US government is giving out free wasps

Tom Scott | October 25, 2024

The brown marmorated stink bug is an invasive pest. To help deal with its numbers, the Oregon Department of Agriculture is releasing its natural enemy: the tiny samurai wasp. There’s a lot of work that goes into it. ▪ Thanks to all the team at the ODA, and to Chris Hedstrom for the macro footage.

I'm focusing on just one project here to make the story clearer, but I should point out there are many different projects like this, working with many different species. (And to preempt the obvious question in the title: the wasps are not available to the general public!)

As long as we keep importing from other countries we will bring stow aways! Via Boat, Plane and on people and in there luggage! On day we might bring something back from Mars or another place on space that could cause problems for us!

so tiny wasps at the size or maybe smaller than ants that hunt other bugs to lay their eggs, harmless to people and are nectar eaters (at least the adults are) and pollen spreaders…. wish we had those instead of the normal wasps here in Norway

Ah that’s why I keep seeing these tiny wasps get stuck in my garage.. we used to get a ton of those stink bugs. We also used to get boxelder bugs that would take over my garage every fall that mysteriously stopped showing up in huge numbers. I do see far less stink bugs now, but wonder if this little wasp also took care of the boxelder bugs.

Tachinid flies are also parasitoids of many types of pest insects, so they're also used as bio-controls in agriculture.
I found out about them after seeing an insect on my window and noticing a cluster of tiny white eggs on its head.

No. The US government isn't giving Anyrhing away for free. They can't. They have no income or money of thier own. Everything they have, everything they "give away" is paid for with money stolen from the American people.
