Agree, this is a solid list of contemporary Prog. I like that you suggest an album to check out. There is heaps of great music out there that is “new” to many ears, and this list is spot on.

Prog is dead didn’t you know and all the bands you mentioned are rather bad (Riverside) plagiarisers (Wobbler) or average… the only contemporary good prog band you mentioned is Porcupine Tree, and you forgot Presto Ballet which released a very good first album« Peace among the ruins ». The following ones are not so brilliant. The problem with all those bands is that they mingle elements from old prog bands but but never manage to have their own sound, they are rather tribute bands for me but that’s only my opinion.

Dream Theatre begat Liquid Tension Experiment, I wonder what Chris Welch would make of them?
The two Davids, Gregory and Longdon era BBT is the pinnacle of their career, with English Electric Pts I & II their very best.
I saw the latest incarnation of BBT at Cropredy this yeaŕ and as competent as they were I doubt I'll see them again or buy their records.
My time for them went once we lost DL.

Arena are my number 1 Prog band from the 1990`s onwards and I would recommend most of their albums. Like yourself I am also a fan of The Flower Kings `Stardust We Are`.

We got Steven Wilson, Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Roine Stolt, Nick D'Virgilio, Mariuzs Duda, Lars Fredrik Frøislie and Ross Jennings, all torchbearers. IMHO Barry, you could've pulled a Pete Pardo and do a tie at no. 10, if not for anything else, to include Mikael Åkerfeldt.

"Thom Yorke's detuned mewing" is the funniest and yet most accurate description of his vocalizing I've ever heard! I tittered. Also, you missed Dream Theater's biggest failing, the nearly unlistenable squealing of the 'singer'. Truly, they would be a great band with a different singer.
Thanks, an excellent list, touching on many of my fave bands. Wobbler are new to me so I will check them out.

If they were still together I would say that Beardfish should be near the top of this list somewhere. Another contemporary prog band that is certainly a contender is Ritual. They've just released their 5th studio album this year. Check them out.

Good list, although I'd include Magenta somewhere near the very top alongside P Tree, Haken and BBT. Also, Opeth and that Strapping Young Lad guy himself, Devin Townsend in his various different heavy prog guises. Oh, that's five already! Then there's Moon Safari, Mr. K Torabi's updated version of Gong (I think this is a concession that counts), Wobbler, Radiohead and, obviosly, the mighty, resurrected Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Personally I believe RPWL deserved a spot on this list or at least an honorable mention. The album World Through my Eyes is the artistic equivalent of taking a stroll through the Louvre.
