The Most Annoying Song in Video Game History – Mega Man VII Auto’s Shop Theme – Whang!
The Mega Man series is known for having some of the all time best music in video games. This song, however, is not one of them. If you spend too much time in Auto’s Shop in Mega Man VII, your life will be ruined forever.
The early Mega Man games, particularly Mega Man II and Mega Man III, are among my favorite soundtracks of all time. They greatly shaped the way I work as a musician. However, the game’s music has had its ups and downs. Although Mega Man VII’s soundtrack wasn’t a complete “down,” Auto’s Shop music is just weird. It’s basically a very short 5 second loop of blaring, obnoxious synths that repeat over and over again until Mega Man is done spending bolts on whatever items he’s gonna spend bolts on.
Mega Man VII was only released in 1995, so there were many years left of great music in the series. It has the interesting distinction of being the first main series Mega Man game to be released after Mega Man X, and it is also the only one of the main line Mega Man games on SNES. The next main Mega Man game would be Mega Man 8, which was released on the PSX and Saturn. Otherwise, the SNES was mostly the domain of Mega Man X games. Maybe that’s why this particular entry in the series had such a weird vibe.
