The Miserable Reality Of Life On The Mayflower

Weird History | September 15, 2026

In 1620, the Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower and sailed across the Atlantic toward the New World. But what they endured on that voyage was far more brutal than most history books reveal. For months, the Pilgrims lived aboard a cramped wooden ship, battling storms, disease, hunger, freezing temperatures, and filthy conditions as they crossed the Atlantic to America.

In this episode of Weird History, we take a look at the harsh reality of life on the Mayflower. What did the Pilgrims eat? How did they sleep? What happened when sickness spread through the ship? And what did it take to survive the terrifying voyage that would ultimately lead to the founding of Plymouth Colony?

Do you think you could have survived the Mayflower? Let us know in the comments.

(Much like real history, this video was produced entirely by human beings.)

Almost no one reverses, or even ever thinks about, them. And the ACTUAL reason the pilgrims fled Europe was because they weren't allowed to persecute others as per their religious (cult) beliefs and they refused to live peacefully.

    religion is a mental illness

Interesting twist of history. If John Howland had not been rescued, the world would never have known FDR, Alec Baldwin, Humphrey Bogart, the Bush family,, Sarah Palin, Dr. Spock and countless others.

Its interesting how many folks credit the "Saints" (as they called themselves) with wanting to establish religious freedom. Far from it. They wanted to establish an autocratic/theocratic state..but with THEM in charge! No thought of tolerance of other beliefs.

Wait, so the original Europeans to come to America and established the US didn't think of Christmas as a Christian holiday? So no "Keep Christ in Christmas"? And they didn't believe in big churches and idolatry? So why do we have all that now? Could it be that we are being manipulated by people (like Trump) who use religion for their own power and wealth? Just like the kings that the pilgrims were trying to escape?

I can trace my DNA to Mayflower ancestors, they said they did not like the ride. My neighbor Tyrone, said his DNA was from a different boat ride and they certainly said it was bad also!

So half of the pilgrims died that winter. Had they not even been onboard to begin with, they would have survived (in England), the passengers would have had twice as many rations per person (possibly no casualties then), and there would have been room for even more supplies. Tragic math.

All those self righteous people who go on about how they’ll never have kids because “how could you look at the state of the world and think it’s ok to bring a child into it?” Need to watch this and get some perspective

Not all Mayflower Passengers were people seeking Religious freedom. Some, such as my 13th great grandfather, John Billington, and his wife and two sons, were just trying to start over after mucking things up in Europe. BTW, John Billington was the first person executed in the Massachusetts colony..so I’ve got that going for me…
