The Beatles’ Ed Sheeran Moment: Civil Rights, Segregation, and the Jim Crow South

In 1964, The Beatles had their own “Ed Sheeran moment.”

In September of 2026, Ed Sheeran lost his entire lineup of supporting acts and his backing band after billionaire Robert Kraft demanded he drop Macklemore from his tour after the rapper proclaimed “Free Palestine.” It was Sheeran giving up the leverage he had as an artist over a promoter.

Sixty two years ago, The Beatles’ were faced with a similar moral dilemma when they set out for their first American tour in 1964 at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, hitting tour stops in the south. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 had just been signed into law by President Johnson that July, and the American South was actively flouting it.

This is the story of that tour, a one-line clause in The Beatles rider, a moral stand that Paul McCartney called “just common sense,” and the famous Gator Bowl stop in Jacksonville, FL. And it’s a lesson Ed Sheeran can learn from one of the all-time greatest bands around.
