The 100 Year Journey to Proxima Centauri B (Sci-Fi Documentary)

Venture City | October 10, 2024

This is a sci-fi documentary, looking at the 100 years it will take a nuclear fusion spacecraft to travel to Proxima Centauri b. The closest habitable planet to Earth, with a distance of 4.24 light years.

A journey venturing far beyond Earth’s solar system, showing the future science of space travel, exploration, and future space technology.

Personal inspiration in creating this video comes from: the movie Interstellar, The Expanse TV show, and Carl Sagan’s Cosmos TV show.

Other topics in the video include: the population growth over the 100 year timelapse journey to Proxima Centauri b, how bacteria evolves in a closed loop system, the design of the spaceship habitat ring, the rotations per minute needed to generate 1-g of artificial gravity, the conservation of angular momentum in space, the living conditions on Proxima Centauri b (the higher gravity, and the red light), and time dilation is explained (how many extra days will pass on Earth when the spaceship arrives at the destination planet – just like the movie Interstellar).

The grand crossing to Proxima Centauri B.

Some personal inspiration for this video came from: the movie Interstellar, the Nauvoo generational ship from The Expanse tv show, and Carl Sagan's Cosmos tv show.

Areas of the video where I would want to expand in more detail include: the ship design and how it was built, specific technology on board such as medical tech, and maybe more about the nuclear fusion engines. 🖖

The short video, Interstellar A.I.: Writing the Encyclopedia of the Galaxy (inspired by Carl Sagan), is available on my Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/venturecity

New Project: This is something I've wanted to start for a number of years, creating an Encyclopedia of the Future. A collection of entries, defining future technology in the areas of space habitation, space engineering, biotechnology, cyber society, A.I. robotics, regenerative medicine, and much more.

The first volume contains 31 entries with illustrations and is also available on my Patreon. It is a large ongoing project, with additional volumes to be published that will complete the final Encyclopedia.

So rich people from the past who caused all the problems on earth get to wake up and rule over the new humans? Call me crazy if you like but I would jettison every single one.

This was a fun sci-fi adventure, and I appreciate the time and effort it took to put it all together.

But… the idea here is to squash 1800 people onto a ship on a one-way trip to a place none of them will ever live to see? Meanwhile, they will have to live under strict guidelines for what they can do, how many kids they can have, what jobs they can do, and they'll never be able to go "outside"?

Can't see how this would possibly fail. My guess is everyone goes nuts within about 90 days and we get something like "The Event Horizon". The angsty teenagers alone will demand they go back home so they can get out of their parents' "house".

I just really don't see us traversing the stars to other planets, especially if our only motivation is "for the good of all mankind." That level of reasoning is good enough to unite us without major quarrels for…. mmm… maybe a few years at most? I have a feeling that once new generations started to grow up, they'd be upset with their elders for having forced them onto this one-way journey and depriving them of all the good things on Earth. And there would be politics, divisions, disagreement, etc. Just because one group starts off with "this is our goal and we all will cooperate" doesn't mean it stays that way. The new generations would likely fracture, rebel, and come up with their own plans. I could see them 30 years out and the young people overthrow whoever the 'command structure' is and turning the ship around so they could at least get back to Earth before they die without ever seeing it. There would be some major anger from the generation that is doomed to be born and die in space, never setting foot on either planet.

But let's pretend they do succeed. They get to a new planet. Are they still really part of the human race in a meaningful sense? They have evolved new characteristics, new traits, new bacteria, and a totally difference experience from anything anyone back home had. Genetically, they may still be related, but from a practical view, they share almost nothing else in common with those on Earth. Even if Earth is destroyed, they won't know it for 4+ years when the communication flow stops.

Artificial gravity by spinning like that ? Wouldn't the orientation of the body change a it changes positio; if I am standing at 6 o'clock, the gravitational force would be horizontal at 9 o'clock position and inverted at 12 o/-.clock. The centrifugal former is totally different than on earth.

You never know, we may have developed statis or long term hibernation by this point. We may not be able to keep people in hibernation for 100 years but even 10 or 20 of it would vastly reduce resource needs, breeding needs etc.,

Да не полетят они так. Не будут они жить на корабле как колония. Спать будут (замороженными в капсулах) или будут посланы эмбрионы. Режиссеры в фильмах сочиняют бредятину прост. Надо тип интригу создать чтоб люди смотрели.

But by the time they send that message announcing their arrival, they receive an autoreply message that the Earth Global Government has had several changes in administration since their last contact and the budget for the Proxima Centauri B project was de-funded 23 years before. Earth says it is sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

The point about the sending of the message taking 4.24 years to arrive on earth is the simplest way of understanding all the talk about seeing into the past when astro folk talk about light from far off suns etc. So "hi it's me, we've made it" is history as it happened 4 year ago. Great video x
