Terrifier 1 and 2 (2016 & 2022) – Monster Madness XX

It’s Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness XX: Trick or Treat! (That’s XX for 20 years.) This year I’m covering movies that take place on Halloween, and I’m kicking things off with one of the most brutal series in modern horror. Terrifier (2016) follows Art the Clown as he stalks his victims through Miles County on Halloween night, butchering anyone who gets in his way. Terrifier 2 (2022) picks up a year later, with Art resurrected by a sinister entity and hunting teenager Sienna and her younger brother on Halloween. Director Damien Leone made these on tiny budgets, and Terrifier 2 became infamous for reports of people fainting and throwing up in theaters. Here’s what I thought.

Funny you mentioned how there will be more, skeptical it will end with the 4th movie, which is what Damien Leone has said. When I met David Howard Thornton last year I asked him do you really think he stops at 4 movies. He seemed to indicate it wouldn't be the end but maybe for a while and joked about the franchises success by saying something like plus, I could use a few more houses. BTW meet David if you have a chance. Nicest and hardest working human being at conventions. He loves his fans! I also think that is why these movies are also a hit. Everyone involved are good human beings and love their fans. They aren't phony. Aren't appearing at cons just for a paycheck and act all grumpy when meeting you. They are genuine and love meeting the fans that helped make this one of the biggest franchises in horror.

Terrifier is one of the best horror franchises in a long damn time and Art has quickly obtained icon status along with Michael, Jason and Freddy. Art is everywhere which is why it's hard to believe at the height of its popularity (I 100% guarantee the 4th movie will be one of the highest grossing horror movies ever) that Damien will just end it, no more Art the Clown. Damien like all of us is a huge horror fan and like any horror fan we know that horror franchises are meant to be milked over and over and over. I doubt Damien goes too overboard where 30+ years from now we are getting a retconned Terrifier movie like Halloween has done, but at the same time it's hard to think he stops with 4.

Here's to 20 great years of Monster Madness, and here's to another 20 (or more). You know, James, since Terrifier 3 is a Christmas movie, how about next year you dedicate Monster Madness to CHRISTMAS THEMED horror movies? There's a lot of them for some reason.

My friends 14 year old son put Terrifier on last year and I woke up from a food coma to the 'cunt to cranium' scene… I saw faces of death a long time ago and even that scene made me go, "WHAT IN THE FUCK?!"
