About St. Paul and The Broken Bones:
Grit, elemental rhythm, tight-as-a-drumhead playing, and a profound depth of feeling: these are the promises of a great soul band. And St. Paul & The Broken Bones deliver on those promises.

Half The City is the compelling full-length Single Lock/Thirty Tigers debut of the Birmingham, Alabama-based sextet, who have already created a maelstrom of interest with their roof-raising live shows and self-released four-song 2012 EP. Produced by Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes, and recorded and mixed in the storied R&B mecca of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the album harkens back to the region’s classic soul roots while extending the form with electrifying potency.

Lyrics:
Everybody knows
Catfish got no scales
Everybody knows
That cotton comes in bales
The Mississippi River
Deep and muddy stream
I just sit on the bank
and fish while I dream

whoa whoa whoa
whoa whoa whoa

I can’t pick no cotton
I can’t pick no corn
It just keeps on raining
And I just stay at home

whoa whoa whoa
whoa whoa whoa

I am so miserable
I am so tired
I watch that Mississippi river
till the fishes swim by
my life is so confused
but I don’t want to die
I wanna go to heaven
but I am afraid to fly

whoa whoa whoa
whoa whoa whoa
I know I know I know

I never meant to do what I did

    The Soul Of O.V. Wright

    ℗ 1965 Geffen Records ..
O.V. Wright .. Overton Vertis "O. V." Wright was an American singer who is generally regarded as a blues artist by African-American fans in the Deep South; he is also regarded as one of Southern soul's most authoritative and individual artists. ~

    O. V. Wright/Age at death ..

    41 years (1939–1980) —

The end came too early for Overton Vertis Wright. It was in the back of an ambulance en route to a Birmingham, Ala., hospital after he suffered his third heart attack on Nov. 16, 1980. He was 41 years old. His life had been marked by multiple marriages, a heroin addiction he couldn't shake, and a stint in jail for drug possession. But he had also become one of the most moving soul singers in an era filled with stiff competition. He was O.V. Wright. Many soul singers of that period could sing sad lyrics, but the grief was often feigned. Not Wright. His hurt was real. The titles of some of the songs he recorded provide a clue: "Drowning on Dry Land," "I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled and Crazy," "You're Gonna Make Me Cry," and Wright's masterpiece, an unhappy tribute to the instruments of his addiction: "A Nickel and a Nail."

"He sang and lived the sadness of his life," recalls Otis Clay, a friend of Wright's and mine, and one of the few remaining singers who truly carry on the deep soul tradition. "He was a singer's singer." Mr. Clay and others honored Wright at a memorial concert here last Saturday. ~~~
