S.G. Goodman Announces New Album Planting by the Signs, Set for June Release

Kentucky-born singer-songwriter S.G. Goodman is back, and she’s bringing a fresh breath of her soulful authenticity to the table with the announcement of her upcoming album, Planting by the Signs, set to be released on June 20 via her own Slough Water Records in collaboration with Thirty Tigers. Goodman, who has carved a niche as a mastersmith of contemplative folk and indie rock, aims to steer her sonic journey through the raw turbulence of loss and renewal in her latest offering.

In a heartfelt reflection, Goodman revealed that Planting by the Signs has been inspired by the poignant losses she faced recently—the death of her beloved dog and the passing of a close mentor. This emotional foundation is expected to shape the album’s themes of love, grief, and resilience. "I found the fire to keep pushing and to make what I believe is my best record yet," she shared in a press release. "Who’ll put the fire out? The only person who can put my fire out is myself."

The album’s lead single, “Fire Sign,” drops today alongside a compelling music video that captures Goodman’s artistic spirit in motion. The track features powerful lyrics juxtaposed against an evocative melody, showcasing her ability to turn personal loss into universal truths. "People are quick to tell you that you are not working hard enough, but slow in telling you that you are working hard enough,” Goodman adds, shedding light on the chaotic nature of relentless touring and the inner drive it takes to thrive as an independent artist.

With contributions from luminaries such as Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Matthew Rowan—who both lend their talents to the project—Planting by the Signs promises a tapestry of sounds that evoke both intimacy and epic resonance. The album’s tracklist includes intriguing titles like “Nature’s Child,” featuring Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and “Heaven Song,” hinting at an exploration of life’s complexities through Goodman’s distinctive lens.
