Robyn: From Pop Puppet to Independent Icon

This is Robin S with her 1993 US top five hit “Show Me Love”. It’s one of the greatest house-pop songs ever. Just to make things clear this is not Robyn with a “y”. The Swedish pop sensation who also had a 90’s top ten hit with a song called “Show Me Love”. The latter Robyn is one of the most important pop stars of the last three decades. Any female pop artist to have survived and thrived into their thirties is an impressive feat, most being chewed out after their first album. But Robyn got chewed out, and then went on to do better than ever. She went from pop puppet to critically acclaimed indie `darling. As The Guardian clickbait-titled their 2018 article: “Robyn transformed pop music”, and they aren’t wrong. Everyone from Britney Spears to Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Teagan and Sara, and Ariana Grande have taken bits and pieces from Robyn’s sound, persona and work-ethic. All this plus, Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” is one of the most perfect pop singles of the twenty-tens. But who is Robyn? How did she get here? And how did a 30-something Euro-pop artist outdo the greatest faces and producers in modern pop?

I'd never seen it before, but Girls Aloud's album "Biology" has a cover that is basically a direct copy of X-Ray Spex's 1978 album "Germfree Adolescents"

Cyndi Lauper was obviously a huge influence on Dancing On My Own, and I would credit Roxette overall for keeping up a pop standard of quality

"How did she outdo the greatest faces and greatest voices of modern pop????"
Easy mate, she IS the greatest face and greatest voice of modern pop by a country fucking mile!!!
Whenever I see a slavering article on Sophie,Hyper Pop,Charlie xcx etc, etc, etc I just go to automatic "Er,they all ripped off Robyn",settings, every time, honestly,it's sooo fucking tedious right now.Robyn IS perfect pop music, end of story, ask anyone that, really, knows anything about contemporary pop music,Jesus Christ.

Funny thing is that Robyn's real name is Robin, so technically, two Robins sang a song with the same name, it's just one Robin's stage name is spelled Robyn.

Omitting to mention her work with Röyskopp is a crime.

Robyn was never a puppet. She cowrote her early music. On her second album she sang about aborting her child. They wanted her to scrap the song, she said no, so her album wasn't released the US. She didn't care. Britney never had a freedom Robyn did from the get go.

It is disgusting that the mega-corporations freeload off Robyn's creativity for the last two decades. Jive records and its parent company should have worked with Robyn back in the late 90s. They could have done way better and made way more money together. But no….corporate vanity and greed…
