The irony here, I think, is if Biden chose a better, more electable running mate, he would not need to hold out for this long until passing the baton to Harris.

Personally, I believe Biden did not want to pass because he fundamentally did not believe Harris would win. Which, frankly, is about as sexist and racist as it goes.

For Harris's part, I think she is doing better than expected. I originally saw her as just someone who would be another Kim Campbell, but she is still a veteran politician in Washington with tons of experience. In particular, I noticed how much she does NOT talk about her own identity, which makes her feel less "woke" than Biden.

Anyway, I am not American, I don't care too much about who will win. These are just my opinions.

I’m very surprised how successful the swap out of Biden to Harris seemingly was.

I think it speaks to a number of things that are in contrast Canada’s situation, where Trudeau’s unpopularity is tied to that of his party, while Biden’s unpopularity was largely on his age and apparent incompetence.

Harris improved on Biden’s numbers by 5+%. Furthermore, down ballot Democrats were projected to outperform the Biden ticket, with senate dems more popular in their swing states than Biden was (I.e Sherrod Brown in Ohio, Ruben Gallego in Arizona, and Bob Casey Jr. in Pennsylvania)

I was squarely in the camp that Biden shouldn’t have been replaced, not because I like him as a candidate but I didn’t think it was politically smart to do so.

Perhaps it’s still a bad move, and it’s far from a decided race, but the reaction to Harris seems fairly positive from her base, and conservatives haven’t really latched onto a strong message against her.

I’m curious if Canadian Liberals will be more willing to make the change now that the Democrats seemingly made the right gamble.

Kamala Harris isn't who i would have picked to take Biden's spot. Her background as a district attorney is a bit off-putting to members of the party that dislike those involved with law enforcement (which is a fair percentage of the democrats) and her involvement with Biden's administration (which is seen by many as an abject failure) also doesn't really help her either.

If you told me in 2021 that Kamala might be president, I would’ve thought Biden became terminally ill but props to Kamala, who would have thought having a youthful candidate might actually give you a chance of winning over the boring old guy.

Harris is not "enormously divisive in her own right." Of course Republicans try to characterize her that way, but they don't matter. She is a moderate, which Democrats and independents recognize. The Democratic Party always has divisions, as it comprises several factions, but I expect the internal divisions to be no more than the normal amount this year. The spectre of another Trump term should keep the Party together. I just hope Democratic voters are as motivated to turn out as they were four years ago.

Don't get your hopes up for the USA going Republican this year. Biden is done and Trump is also well past his "best by" date. I thought the Democrats could have done better than Harris, had they started looking for a candidate earlier, but she seems to be doing well enough now that she is free to campaign. She is an experienced candidate and officeholder, albeit a Californian. Although an old man myself, I will be relieved when both of these old men are gone from US politics.

I object to your use of "progressive." The self-described "progressives" in the US are not progressive. Some of them are saying that the recalls we will be having in my district this year are not progressive, although the recall was one of the innovations of the Progressive Movement in the United States in the early 20th century. The word has become meaningless. Don't tell me what adjective people use to describe themselves, just tell me what policies they stand for.

Bro you should research the position and power the British Monarchy holds in Canada , as we use to be told the Queen was just a figure piece with no real power over our country. This is NOT the cause. Back when Harper called an early election (one in which the Conservatives went from a minority to a *majority led government) at the time it was claimed by Alex Jones that the election was forced by the Queen cause the current minority government couldn't get the needed votes to pass laws…. I thought B.S. , the Queen has no say. … …. … I was wrong. By researching the Canadian government website I shockingly found out the Queen through the governor general could dissolve Parliament and call for a new election at anytime they please. It was worded like "not too often" or "only once in awhile" , which i also found shocking as it holds little legal meaning. So this didn't mean what Jones said was correct , but was possible. This was long ago and the internet was much more limited. Perhaps there is an official or legal way we as Canadians can find out the truth now. (??) If IT is truth and you prove it … Dam , Heads will turn , you'll be poppin bottles. … 🟥🍁🟥 (for the record i haven't listen to AJ for over 10ys, and I stopped voting long before that.)

You failed to point out the massive unwavering support for Trump in the US is largely seen as the means to save America from the subversion evil demonic take over long embedded in the political class of both main parties. These views outweigh any counter to the destruction and issues caused by Trudeau here in Canada .

Unusual doesn't even begin to describe it. One got in on last name recognition, lies and foreign interference, the other, lies and stolen election by violating key state constitutions.

I don't see people saying they hate Liberal policy so much, they dislike the controversies but not Liberal politics. I don't see people championing Conservatism either in Canada. The unpopularity of the Liberals seems to solely be around Trudeau and how long he has been in office. Feels like Liberals should put in place term limits for their own sake if people just dislike them because Justin has been there so long.
