ONE HIT WONDERLAND: “Barbie Girl” by Aqua

Todd in the Shadows | October 27, 2024

Mattel may like “Barbie Girl” now, but back in 1997, there were scandals in lawsuits when one Danish band defamed Barbie’s good name with one of the maddeningly catchy songs ever made.

I distinctly remember hearing this song in 1982 when I was a kid. That song and the song we love dirty laundry kick them when their up kick them whem their down. Both had sexual under or over tones. And, annoyingly bothe songs would get stuck in a loop in my head. Now, I'm told its a Mandela effect. Wtf?

I was listening to Danish Radio one morning (I live in Denmark) and I heard "Turn Back Time" come on. Thinking it was just another Europop classic that had passed me by I opened up Shazam, only to nearly spit out my coffee when I saw it was by Aqua.

Doctor Jones became an anthem at my high school because the principal of my high school was actually Doctor Jones (doctorate in education). We literally danced around him in a circle to Doctor Jones at one of our school dances. This would have been 2009/2010 ish.

Aqua isn't one hit wonder band, they are FAAAAAAAAAR from one hit, they were huge and fucking great. You can say everything you want about them, but almost all of 90s europop songs were great and catchy, they had positive energy and are actually fun and danceable, unlike 95% of pop dredge that came out from post 00s.
Also Kyle Gordon – Planet of the Bass (a great fucking song by the way) was inspired by bands like Aqua, and other ridiculous but great eourobands.

This song reminds me of primary school disco (2000s). Which makes it funnier in hindsight as the lyrics are quite dirty as an adult! We just thought it was a song about dolls!
Dr Jones is also popular, but obviously not as popular as Barbie Girl.

No one is going to see this comment or care, but as a HUGE Madonna fan, I felt the need to clarify lol. Madonna’s Material Girl was supposed to be taken as satire about the 80’s culture of over indulgence and consumerism.

I might stand against everything Barbie Girl lyrics say, but it sure is the best karaoke song ever. You just can't deny how fun it is to scream out I'M A BARBIE GURLLL or meme on C MON BARBIE LET'S GO PARTAY.
