Obongjayar Unveils ‘Sweet Danger’ as He Gears Up for ‘Paradise Now’

May 25, 2024 – British-Nigerian musical chameleon Obongjayar, who has forged captivating collaborations with luminaries like Fred Again, Little Simz, and Danny Brown, is ready to unveil his most ambitious project to date: Paradise Now. Slated for release on May 30, the album promises a rich tapestry of sound, blending electronic beats, soul, and Afrobeat into a unique sonic landscape. The stage is set with the release of his latest single, "Sweet Danger," which offers a tantalizing glimpse into his evolving artistic vision.

"Sweet Danger," which showcases Obongjayar’s playful yet edgy style, unfolds like a cinematic tapestry, woven with threads of Spaghetti Western flair and Afrobeat nostalgia. In the accompanying video, directed with flair, we see a cast of eccentric characters congregating at a nondescript motel. The imagery is as vivid as the track itself, where Obongjayar boldly declares, “Only one night/Can’t stay, I’ll be gone by tomorrow.” As he channels his inner rogue, he mischievously slaps the rear of a mechanical bull stationed in the motel’s conference room, warning, “Baby, did you not know I’m a singer?/I’m a wild boy/Baby, I am trouble.”

According to a recent press release, Paradise Now was meticulously crafted between London and Los Angeles, enlisting the talents of notable producers such as Kwes Darko, Yeti Beats, and Beach Noise—known for their work with icons ranging from Pa Salieu to Kendrick Lamar. The album features 15 tracks, with Little Simz serving as the only guest feature, hinting at a vibrant collaboration that fans can expect to deepen the album’s narrative.

Obongjayar’s artistic journey truly took form last summer, when he brought Paradise Now to life through an intimate party series held at London’s Ormside Projects art and music venue. The affair, which boasted an impressive lineup of performers including Simz, was a precursor to what is shaping up to be an electrifying record. To keep the momentum, the artist is planning another such event next month, inviting fans to become part of his musical journey.

Following the album release, Obongjayar is set to embark on a U.K. and European tour this fall, marking a significant milestone in his career with shows in vibrant hubs such as Berlin, Cologne, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, and his largest London appearance yet at the O2 Kentish Town Forum. Fans will want to mark their calendars, as pre-sale for tickets begins on April 8, with general sales on April 11, promising to be a hotly anticipated event.

As anticipation for Paradise Now builds, Obongjayar is positioning himself at the forefront of contemporary music, crafting a space where genres converge and identities flourish. With "Sweet Danger," he invites us into his tempestuous world, one where the extraordinary feels distinctly within reach. Come May 30, it’s clear: this is the beginning of a new chapter for Obongjayar, and the wait will undoubtedly be worth it.
