Is the Line 5 pipeline necessary—or is it putting the Great Lakes and tribal treaty rights at risk?

On this episode of Native Bidaské, host Levi Rickert speaks with Bay Mills Indian Community President Whitney Gravelle about Michigan’s recent approval of permits for the Line 5 tunnel project.

Gravelle discusses:
• Why tribal consultation is failing Indigenous communities
• Treaty rights and the 1836 Treaty of Washington
• The cultural importance of the Straits of Mackinac
• Why she believes Line 5 is not essential to Michigan’s energy infrastructure
• What legal challenges come next
