Musical Phrasing: Explained!

92.9 The Torch | February 9, 2025

How can musicians use phrasing and punctuation to add expression to their playing?

In this video, we explore some ways to take your playing further by looking at musical phrases, dynamics, and tempo to create more expressive music. Phrasing in music is a way for musicians to add a more human element to their performance. Just as how correctly phrasing in speech can help communicate ideas and emotion, by adding phrasing to our music we can help communicate ideas to the listener.

In this video, I mostly use the guitar as an example, but the ideas can also be used on piano, singing, violin or other instruments as well.
