I was at a free music festival organized by my city. On the 3rd day, main stage, the first band performing was a very popular, Polish 80s rock band Bajm. I came there to see them, but the experience was ruined by the fact, that right after Bajm, two rappers were performing, so kids decided to go to Bajm just to get a good place to see the next shows, and then just sat down on the ground, started vaping and playing frickin cards. On the ground, in a crowd at a rock concert. I kicked some boy liek 5 times because he decided that sitting pretty much on my feet was a good idea.

Bajm did play good though. For another band, Lady Pank, me and my friend had to travel through the city to another stage. There wasn't any issue with a bad crowd. They were either metalheads or middle aged men, they were having fun, enjoying the show and didn't ruin the experience at all.

working festivals is so much better, dont have to pay, cleener quieter staff camp and toilets, more lax security, being able to sneek back stage, bringing in your own food and drinks.

Smaller festivals is where it's at from my experience. I went to Wacken once, and it was mostly wack. Bad weather, bad sound, overcrowded with wannabe vikings. Been to Roadburn 6 times now (and it's absolutely fantastic) and that's way more my pace, plus a couple of black metal centric festivals around the globe.

I recently went to electric forest 2024. People were really cool, art was one of a kind, music was awesome. Omg it rained so much, prices were BS, and the food not only expensive, but bland. There's a local music venue where I live that's small compared to other places. It's cheap, you actually get to camp in the woods, there's a giant quarry you can swim in(only with a lifeguard). It was actually really humbling seeing some place that's small be the better option.

there's an organization called psyclean in the Netherlands that is volunteer led but by people that genuinely care about leave no waste and recycling even giving out portable ash trays on arrival for smokers with incentives for handing in full ones.

Sweetwater 420 fest in Atlanta was always fun too. The last time I went was a little sketchy near the end of the last day tho, they way oversold tickets and homeless people from the surrounding atlanta area were just hopping the fence and wandering around yelling at the sky and stealing things. Honestly its too bad they got sued by some asshole that wanted to open carry his guns at a packed beer and weed themed music festival. Now they have to have them at smaller and smaller venues with worse and worse acts cause they can't afford the insurance or security needed to host it in a public park if people are gunna be waving guns around.

Hulaween in Florida was a good fest the few times I went. So much focus on art and the stages were far enough away from eachother that you couldn't hear them overlap, but no so far that the trip to each stage was a slog. Haven't been in a few years tho cause i've been broke lol

Everyone should take some lessons from Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium.
Dialed in. Good food. Smaller stages in massive tent structures. Bumper cars, giant ferris wheel for a bird's eye view. Showers for 1 Euro.

This is the reason I only go to UG Electronic music festivals in the forest. There people do not trash, are very polite and friendly. Also, food is awesome and cheap and water is free.

I used to work in festivals. They have devolved into a soulless cash grab. Long lines to get festival tokens (which are virtually impossible to get a refund for) to get in another line to get an overpriced, watered-down drink. Longer lines for toilet with police standing by ready to kick you out if you can't hold it any longer. When I started working in the industry i was passionate about it, by te end of my career I'd get anxious and depressed having to go to work. 12 hour back to back shifts for a flat rate. No weekend pay rate, no overtime. Go support your local artists at bars and pubs.

So many rock festivals crashing and burning these days. EDM festivals have (for the vast majority) been flourishing, mostly due the fact that the community has a tradition of respectful standards and are always striving to improve the experience. The community supports itself. I don't think the rock festival scene has that higher standard , at least in the US. Yes, the larger and more mainstream the fest, the more likely you'll have problems because the average person lacks responsibility. Rock festivals need better organization and communities if they are to survive.
