Im down with Aerosmith but the fact they have more metal/hard rock awards than any other rock band says a lot about how MTV viewed rock, not exactly a heavy band. MTV has not been relevant for a long long time and for a channel that no longer plays music videos handing out a video music award is peak irony. I'm 45 so I'm glad I grew up during its peak, it really did feel like a channel that was ours. R.I.P MTV

MTV and all other quote unquote music stations completely blow and have now for a long time. Last time MTV was good was there abouts 95 and after that it played 24 hours a day marathons of The Real World and Road Rules. VH1 has sucked since That Metal Show went away when VH1 Classic turned into MTV Classic. They have a few million videos and MTV Classic plays about 20 on a repeat loop 24 hours a day. Award shows are dog shit anyway. All the winners are hand picked by the channels and the music exects on whatever bullshit they are promoting at any given moment.

Too much critical thinking and self awareness in rock. It had to go. Opiates for the masses is all they want us to have now and they can't even get that right. You don't see rappers committing hari kari or dying of unnatural causes at 27 just before they become too influential for a reason. Acceptions don't make the rule nor does "gang" related violence. That's a show in itself. Music as a product is over. Thankfully.

MTV hasn't been a music channel in what…25 years? At this point, MTV has been a NOT music channel longer than it WAS a music channel. MTV has no say, or influence on music anymore, and is irrelevant.

It's not mtv anymore, it hasn't been that since the 90's, it started focusing on subpar reality shows about teen pregnancy and how many fools can you stick under one roof, and now its ridiculousnesstv, rob dyrdek 24/7 rtv

MTV died when Viacom bought it
imagine not having a Best Rock category when you have Ice Nine Kills, Spiritbox, The Pretty Wild, Poppy, Bad Omens, and The Pretty Reckless, plus more i can't even think of right now (oh yeah, DeathByRomy) all releasing killer albums this year.
seriously, Taylor Momsen should be MTV's cover girl right now, she's absolutely smashing it.

This is part of an even bigger issue. Every year the Grammys do the same thing treating rock as if it has the plague. I never understood why they treat rock groups with such distain and disrespect until it came to me that we live in a capitalistic hell world and any form of art that speaks out against ruling authorities and hypocritical philosophies is treated with distain and disrespect, and every year, rock gets the shaft, but rock is not the only one. Other genres of music that speaks truth to power is also treated the same way. When was the last time the Grammys or VMAs gave out best Blues category, or best Classical, or best Folk, or anything that gets people to start thinking critically again? Instead they give out awards to Jail Bate Pop Stars who look more and more like Porn Stars getting awards for their softcore porn videos, and white rappers who think tattooing a beer logo on their face is considered making a statement. And what does that make out for the future of music? The music industry hasn't been an industry for a long time now and has morphed into a sand box for the children of the insanely rich who are the only ones that are allowed to play in, while so many talented people cannot afford to show off their skills, because they can't afford to take time off to go on tour, or purchase the recording and producing equip needed to release their music, or have the door slamned on their faces because labels will only listen to already established acts. The cons are increasingly being stacked against so many new talented people who are trying to make it in a industry that doesn't want anything to do with them or their music to begin with, and it's sad to know that Rock is quickly being one of the first to be discarded in the trash bin by this industry. Now Rock is not dead, and it will always have an audience, but the way things are now. It's killing upcoming talent. I've had conversations with people who were in bands who quit music and went back to college after trying to make it in the industry, and these people were talented, and could play great music, but the way the industry is set up to favor those that are pretty and rich over those who have real talent is a very unfair system. As things continue the way they are, it is less likely for a break out band or artist who will impact the culture the way bands did in the past. And it's a sign of how deeply rotten modern society has become.

MTV died the day they took took Headbangers & 120 Minutes off the air and went full Jackass & Reaiity & Hollywood got bored of it & You Tube & Social media came so no big loss.

As for Rock being dead I feel it has been dead in the mainstream for sometime plus music is aimed at young girls that fast food music. But if you ask me off air Guitar and Drum based music is still out there but I am not that teenager anymore too care sad as it sounds but we all get old.
But that does not mean Rock is dead it is still out there you just have to listen it not just in America.

As a Gen Xer I had no clue the VMAs still existed until recently I saw a commercial. As a huge music fan this doesn’t surprise me one bit but it can’t be too much longer that mtv will still be on air .

Why does rock/metal need to be recognized by a network that doesn't even play music anymore? It's owned by a multi billion or trillion corporation. Does the rock/metal community really need to associated with that? Isn't rock/metal against the establishment? Wasn't the whole point to be rebellious? Look at all the festivals rock/metal has. 99% bands don't get radio play and are unknown to people who listen to popular music but look how many people show up for those festivals. Rock/Metal never needed awards or recognition because the whole reason it got started to counter the mainstream. Tom G Warrior said it best, it used to be anarchy. It sounded wretched and messy and chaotic because that was the point. To be imperfect. Who cares about award shows? We don't need to be recognized by the masses because we recognize each other. I'm glad MTV got rid of the rock/metal category. Fuck them.

The Warning performed last year and they televised only potions of the two songs. Their performance of Evolve is excellent. We don’t watch MTV, everything we need is on YouTube

If they don’t play videos anymore how can they have a awards show ? As a matter of fact didn’t they cancel the channel ? Whatever . So , go ahead group the metal bands in with all that other stuff . No one pays attention to the garbage they put out there now anyways . ROCK WILL NEVER DIE . We always survive ! We come back louder and stronger !
