Jade Bird Reveals Upcoming Third Album: “Who Wants to Talk About Love”

Jade Bird Confronts Darkness and Trauma in Haunting New Track "Dreams"

In a world that often romanticizes dreams, Jade Bird is here to burst that bubble with her latest single, "Dreams." Reflecting on the weight of personal trauma and familial breakdowns, Bird’s new track serves as a somber meditation on the barriers that prevent us from fully connecting with those we care about most.

"Dreams," which Bird describes as “a very dark song,” emerges from the shadows of her own life experiences. As she drove to the studio in sunny Los Angeles, an ironic billboard reading "this is what dreams are made of" struck her with an intensity that would ripple through her creative process. "I saw this as I was coming off a nasty breakdown," she recalls. "I was up until 5 a.m. the night before, grappling with these heavy feelings. It all combined with the brightness of the LA sun, creating a stark contrast that I couldn’t ignore."

With this track, Bird digs deep into her psyche, exploring the relentless push and pull of love intertwined with generational trauma. “It’s about feeling too broken to be with the person you love,” she explains, revealing the heavy toll of family history on her own relationships. "Pushing them away because of generational habits and (I don’t like the word) trauma."

"Dreams" marks a pivotal moment in Bird’s evolution as an artist, both introspective and expansive. The song explores the echo of broken relationships from her own family—and how they reverberated into her life, especially after the end of her engagement. It encapsulates a deep yearning for forgiveness, not just from her father but for herself as well. “I wrote this album while trying to make sense of those broken relationships,” Bird explains. “It’s as much a question as it is an answer—wondering if I could break the cycle while finding my own path to forgiveness.”

This single comes hot on the heels of "Who Wants," marking Bird’s first drop of new music since her collaborative EP, Burn The Hard Drive, with Mura Masa last year. With "Who Wants to Talk About Love," Bird crafted a soundscape that hinted at the evolution of her artistry since her self-titled debut album in 2019 and the more explorative Different Kinds of Light that followed in 2021.

As she stands at this new crossroads, Bird is poised to redefine her narrative, plunging into her emotional depths to produce art that doesn’t just entertain but challenges listeners to grapple with their own truths. "Dreams" is a painful reminder that sometimes, the dream is just a facade; what lies beneath can often be more profound—and haunting—than we dare to articulate.
