I took a ride on a moving radio telescope

The Parkes Radio Telescope, Murriyang, part of CSIRO, is one of the most famous telescopes in the world: and it’s got a unique way of getting equipment up and down from the central section. ▪ More about the Telescope: https://www.csiro.au/en/about/facilities-collections/atnf/parkes-radio-telescope

In 1977 I "rode the dish" at the old 27m incoherent-scatter radar located in Chatanica Alaska – its a very intersting experience – it was controlled by both a DEC PDP-8 and an SDS-930 computer – both had real hand-wired core memory – since 1981 it was moved to Greenland where it is still in operation but with more modern computing facilities.

Just imagine. If some worker decides to turn on this radar, you will be completely fried in just a few seconds.

It's funny, I "knew" that the Parkes radio telescope was one of the largest radio telescopes in the world, but I didn't quite process that until I saw Tom standing not just on it, but on it at ground level when it was tilted all the way to the side.

This is a very cool video, love this, just love the fact that Tom is actually taking a ride on a moving radio telescope, its crazy. Also radio telescopes seem somewhat interesting to me for some reason. Either that or I love technology, at least for the space category!
