Hüsker Dü and the Birth of Alternative Rock

Initially punk rock was not profitable. Though it might save your life, seldom did it pay the bills. The music was brash, loud and rarely ever played on the radio, but Nirvana and grunge changed that in 1991. Unlike the classic rock/metal indebted versions of grunge pedalled by Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains, Nirvana’s version was a slick collision of Black Flag, and The Beatles; a punk, metal, pop hybrid previously unheard by the mainstream public. But as Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic once said in interview: [It] was nothing new, Hüsker Dü did it before us.
Few bands summed up the pre-grunge alternative rock scene of the 1980s like Minneapolis’ Hüsker Dü. Their name came from a Danish boardgame that guitarist/songwriter Bob Mould recalled from his youth, ironically translated as “do you remember?” Starting as an underground hardcore band they transformed into what we’d know today as alternative rock, a sound that would attract the attention of radio stations, major labels and the masses. The musical groundwork they put in their 9 years of existence paved the way for the 90s alt rock takeover. But who were Hüsker Dü? Why were they so important? And how did they give birth to alternative rock?

Fifteen wrote a whole song about Husker Du selling out, then the label they put out the song/album on got bought by a major label so it ended up being a major label release. If I recall correctly. Either way it's my favorite Fifteen song.
I heard a song once and it was beautiful and it was free and it was my dream
I lost my housing at the sweet young age of fourteen
I heard a song on the radio, it was my dream
I found the value of a song walking in the rain cold and alone with no place to go
I found the value of a song singing to myself
Just make it through the night, keep awake till the sunlight
It don′t matter who sold 6 million
It don't matter who made 6 million
What you call success I call excess
What I call important is relevance
I heard a song once it was by Husker Du
They tried to sell their songs for a million dollars
They probably never knew that they kept one scared kid alive
They traded gold for what they had inside
All my friends now are on TV
All my friends now sold what they love for money
All my friends now are bought and sold so easily
All my friends now think they can afford not to be free

This video is about Nirvana and by association Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is quoted more and both bands have more screen time
And nothing touches Husker Du in intensity of music and emotion.

Lol this guy mentions that Mould being gay gave gays "representation"? No one knew Bob was gay back then, he certainly didn't fit the stereotype. Iirc he got outed in the mid 90s by some music magazine, so him being gay wasn't common knowledge while Hüsker Dü were active.

What about The Wipers, Green River, The Minute Men, and others who created this sound? I pretty much worship Bob Mould and Husker Du, but there were many other bands in the mix before and during this era.

I did college radio in Rochester, MN in the late 80s. Station was KRPR. Residents in Red Wing could hear our signal and Greg Norton used to call us to make requests.

Whenever I am feeling off or down or something negative has happened I go for a walk while listening to 'Keep hanging on'. One of those songs that got me through a situation where my ex tried to turn my friends against me. Their songs are a perfect blend of poppy melody with raucous fast punk. RIP Grant Hart. You are a multi talented guy.
