I never really cared for the sound of Indie Music, let alone being a skeptic of the "Indie" label on a band. A lot of times, they are hiding that their small-label is having distribution from the Big Three (Warner, Sony, Universal).

Ive always viewed indie a genre of rock, because like 99% of them always work with or directly for large corporations. Like indie is a genre, while independent means they are self producing

This is a very shallow analysis of 'indie rock'. The term was coined to describe bands on independent labels but it hasn't meant that in quite some time. Just like 'alternative rock' is not really alternative anymore. Most of these genres are just marketing terms to pigeonhole bands into digestible products. If a band is good, who gives a damn what the market calls it.

Indie was just a marketing gimmick. All indie music was just Rock music, but the industry always needs a flashy new name to get young people, who associated "Rock" with fucking Jimmy Buffet, to get them to buy records. Punk rock was renamed multiple times, same with metal, pop, hip hop. This was so that the artists who were not rich would go from multi-million dollar record deals to small royalty deals receiving little to no money at all for their work, while the record companies slowly slipped in their nephews and children into those coveted Superstar spots, and raked in the money from all the differing sub-genres and shoot-offs of the MAIN genre label. If they keep everything fractured and all over the place, the artists don't get the numbers, therefore don't get the deals, and the companies can dump oodles of cash into their totally fabricated, fake acts featuring their family members and friends.

the 49% ownership sony had of all those labels its kind of like the final goal of the systems we have created. you can look at any industry and a monopoly exists or is forming, where your food comes especially. im glad for how much actually is up for choice and isnt part of false dichotomy or trap

At some point I stopped caring about "indie" bands. I just look at genre "rock", "nu-metal", "rap" or whatever and if I like the band then I'm listening to the band. I think searching for bands what sounds good for you is better than searching for bands what are "inDePEnDenT".

I've reached the point in my cynicism that I assume any new band that I come across was meticulous cultivated by a team of social media cunts who jerk off stalefish to algorithm optimization videos.

When I hear Indie as a genre of music, I don't necessarily think of independent artists (though I know that's generally what it means), but I think of a type of sound akin to bands like Grizzly Bear, Death Cab For Cutie, Greg Laswell, etc. Kind of experimental, with a touch of folk, shoegaze, pop, some retro, and some light rock, amidst a few other things.

Indie always felt like a catch all term for anything vaguely pop/rock enjoyed by young white people from middle and upper class backgrounds who want to be counterculture. It meant anything from milquetoast electric guitar music, to experimental synth pop, to banjo music, to sufjan stevens assaulting you with an army of fluttery woodwinds

(well, i guess sufjan stevens has done all of these and actually managed to stay indie so maybe he is to blame for the association lol)

Modest Mouse is an underrated band that had a truly incredible multi-generational run from 1996 – 2011. They lived to see the demise of Grunge, rode the wave of indie rock and the 'garage rock revival', and outlasted its devolution into stomp-clap-hey. And now they're a perpetually-touring jam band.

i always found the indie label weird, it means independent yet the name has nothing to do with the sound and a lot of stuff that doesn't resemble indie musically it's released independently
