The coolest thing i saw come out of /mu/ was The Death of Pablo. Some dude had a dream that Ye dropped a companion album for The Life of Pablo with five very moody and experimental tracks. So he started posting about it and eventually they released the album under The Pablo Collective. Its a great remix album and they even continued working with eachother and released a couple more albums

This video is misleading. I'm 32 and I've been reading /mu/, and other boards on 4chan since 2007, well i started reading /b/ in 2007, and later on in 2008 /fa/ was created, along with /fit/ and r9k, and thats when i dipped my toes into /tv/, and /mu/….when moot got mad about stormfront trolling /news/ and created /pol/ in 2013 was when shit hit the fan. My taste in music was never formed by the internet. I mostly learned about bands, and music the old fashion way, and that's going and spending time at record stores and just reading magazines, or going to shows, and just meeting like minded people irl, ect. now I've been reading /mu/ since 2008 and my music taste has been brought up, and that's total happenstance. I guess I just grew up in a time where everybody wasn't terminally online and you have make an effort to learn stuff irl…idk. WHY DON'T YOU KIDS LIKE TOOL??????

From what I remember, /mu/ is one of worst boards, just like /v/. It's full of hipsters and underages who believe they have most refined taste in music, while in reality most are just barking what Pitchfork, Vice, or whatever e-celeb says so. There were gems from time to time, but most of the time it was mumble rap, at least 5 fucking kpop threads, some metal threads where people reposted same bunch of albums and always bashed new material, and whole lots of ragebait from either Twitter or some major mainstream site.

in the aeroplane over the sea was huge before 2006. pitchfork and all of the indie music blogs of the time, social media like tumblr and myspace, and the newfound love of elliot smith style bright eyes types of the early 00's were responsible for this, not 4chan.

alos, death grips is the worst "band" of all time. awful, nothing good about them. and thats from a former Hella enjoyer

1:17 only in '06? I was earlier than I thought. I want to point out that while there was a lot of genuine discussion and enthusiasm around "/mu/core" albums, the compiling into an "essentials" list was always a little tongue-in-cheek.

Im obviously late to the party with 4chan but I got on it just before and searched for Death Metal {australian} and then all ….nada!? Thought you said that 4 chan had it all for music fans. Oh well. Guess i'll just have to explore that genre on youtube. Love your videos mate. Funny and imformative .

The gospel/black metal band Zeal and Ardor was also formed by 4chan, when some random mu autist challenged the lead singer to blend the two genres. They've been a mainstay at metal festivals since their debut

RE: the potato, tambourine, drumhead album, it's none of those things.
It's a hole cut into a piece of cardboard, like those photo-op boards at hokey events like Renaissance Fairs that you stick your face through.

Although it weasn't specifically on /mu/, the loonies at /b/ helped me discover Boards of Canada when, lurking around some odd 10 years ago, i came across an album thread that called Geogaddi as "music for total psychopaths" and, along with the unsettling album cover, piqued my interest enough to give it a listen

Artists popular on /mu/ become revered on sites like RYM and AOTY. It's not just the labels that run the music scene, it's the lonely 4chan dwellers too.
