How Coca-Cola Is Killing Mexico

fern | October 25, 2024

Please check out the free in depth career guide at https://80000hours.org/fern (ad)

Residents of one Mexican city drink over 2 liters of soft drinks per day. This has catastrophic health consequences for the population. How could it come to this? And what role does Coca-Cola play?

Thanks to Dr. Jaime Page Pliego for his valuable insights.

it's unethical for american companies to have produyction plants in foreign countries

it takes jobs away from citizens, and they skirt humanitarian regulations that our gonverment puts into place, damaging the ecosystem and local people, and theres nothing americans can do to stop them because theyre not in our country

why are they allowed to have plants abroad at all? They only do it so they can break US law without doing anything illegal

This kind of shit is why I'm the only white guy at my work. All of these latin American people move to the US because their country sucks. And their country sucks because their governments have completely sold out to these corporations.

A long time ago (in the 19th and early 20th centuries) it was advised that every one (children included) drink beet and not water. Water was deadly due to cholera, typhoid and other water Bourne diseases. But beer removed all of these toxins through strong heating and germ killing yeasts. And the use of filtering.

The solution is very simple but Coca Cola is unwilling to do it.
Just make Dasani water cheaper than Coke and it’s a win win.
Coca Cola can continue to profit by selling Dasani and the people’s health improves.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for Coca-Cola (in this region) to just bottle the water they take and sell it back to the people? They would save money not turning that water into to coke, and make money off it while helping the people’s health.

(I know that not taking all of their water would be much better, but Coca-Cola want to make money)

Yes, Coca-Cola can be blamed for the lack of water sources or whatever you see fit, but let’s be real here. The culture isn’t about cleaning up after yourself. They dump trash, RAW SEWAGE, anything else in the local rivers. The government has no treatment centers, accessible wells, etc.

This is a failure of the government, the education system in Mexico, and the overall cultural landscape in those areas.

Dude the balls it takes to post this is crazy.
Your dealing with a billion dollar company that doesnt want the headache of "anti publicity".
Posting this is potentially dangerous. Serious balls 👏 and courage.
