How a Beloved ’90s Sitcom Became a COMPLETLY Different Show

Dial-Up Days | October 1, 2026

The Torkelsons was a beloved 90s sitcom, but behind the scenes, two main characters vanished without a trace.

The Torkelsons captured the hearts of viewers with its depiction of a family facing financial struggles with humor and hope. But for those of us who grew up watching it, the sudden disappearance of two children from the cast felt jarring, especially since the show never offered a clear explanation to the audience.

Here, we look at the reality of 90s sitcoms and the chaotic nature of television scheduling. We will explore why the showrunners made these drastic casting changes, how the network handled the transition, and the impact this had on the overall story. It is a strange chapter in sitcom production that many fans still remember to this day.

This is a look back at one of those forgotten TV shows that defined an era of family programming, and why the behind-the-scenes decisions were often more dramatic than the plot lines themselves.

What is the one show you remember that changed its cast overnight? Let me know in the comments, and subscribe to Dial-Up Days for more explorations into the television mysteries of our childhood.

Until this video popped up I had completely forgotten this show existed! Being on a tv show back when time slots meant everything would've been so difficult. There are so many cancelled shows that would do better now when time slots are irrelevant.

I think I've seen reruns of both sides not connecting the two, only feeling vague deja vu. I can tell from watching this I would have preferred the original, it just looked more open, honest, and down to earth. One thing that made Roseanne a hit was the relatable living circumstances of the Connors. So much of America found familiarity with them. I'm sure the same audience would have enjoyed The Torkalsons

So when I used to watch the show, I actually liked it when they went to “almost home” because I liked that Millicent was no longer struggling and that she actually had a job that was providing stability and every day was not a struggle. As for the two kids that disappeared. I chose to believe they went to go live with their father. To me it made sense because the father from time to time would come back. Stephen Floyd was close to him anyway. I don’t know it just made sense. And it was the happiest ending one could hope for from the father, because there was no way he and Millicent were getting back together. Anyway, that’s what I chose to believe.

A show that got a raw deal. Well, in light of the recent death of Gerrit Graham, I'm going to suggest "The Critic."

Broad strokes: it was created by two former Simpsons showrunners, was on ABC for a half season, then it moved to Fox for a criminally short 10 episode second season where it received an untimely murder from an executive who had no sense of humor.

I think this would be right up your alley, my friend.

This show was different in that it was set in a small town in a "flyover state," about a poor family where they didn't come off like the Beverly Hillbillies. It was endearing and played with a lot of heart and the writers seemed like they could at least imagine what it's like to not be from LA or NYC and super rich. Almost Home had a lot of talented actors but we'd already seen this show a million times before. I assumed Ruth Ann and Steven Floyd were the ones to go because their characters were the least developed. The money explanation doesn't fly when they were adding to the cast. This and Brooklyn Bridge (which in my memory aired right after The Torkelsons) were high quality shows that deserved so much better.

I watched this when it first aired, probably because it came on after the Golden Girls. I was like 11/12 and LOVED the idea of talking to the moon! Then it disappeared when it changed time slots. Then suddenly it was back as Almost Home. I remember being kind of weirded out by the new version, but also really liking Britney Murphy. But I only ever watched a couple episodes of that version.

Loved this show!! As a kid I identified with Dorothy Jane. I enjoyed the fact that she liked poetry. I watched the show when it originally aired. I enjoyed both versions of the show. My favorite character on the second version of the show was Gregory Morgan played by Jason Marsden who also played my favorite character Dash X on Eeire Indiana.

I’ve always said this show would’ve been a hit on TGIF or Tuesdays after/before Full House. The Torkelsons suffered from being on the wrong network.
Why do I say this? Why do I feel this way. This show is a family show, but you “hammock” it between the Golden Girls & Empty Nest, while both hugely successful, both are adult programming. Then after the retooling they put it on Friday nights up against the juggernaut ABC block of TGIF 💁🏻‍♂️. See what I mean, ABC had hit shows with 1 parent gone, like Full House, or struggling families, like Rosanne 💁🏻‍♂️. See what I mean. Sad, it was a good show that sadly got picked by the wrong Network.
At the time, NBC was known their adult comedies when ABC was known for their family comedies.

Connie Ray was so good in Hope Floats. It was cool to see her range because the mom in this sitcom was so sweet and her character in Hope Floats was so caddy. I think Ben Affleck was in an episode too.

I loved The Torkelson’s. I was unhappy with the changes that made it Almost Home, but still watched it because I really liked Connie Ray and Olivia Burnette, even though I liked the original version/ cast much better.

"Faendal thinks he can woo Camilla Valerius away from me. 'She's mine,' I keep telling him!"

Jason Marsden plays half the characters in Skyrim.

"You've never heard of the Gourmet? They say he could be in Skyrim right now!"

I watched this show when it aired because my mom and I loved Empty Nest and The Golden Girls, so we watched this one between them. Great show and was massively upset when they changed it.
