Horrors on YouTube Kids

Farrell McGuire | September 28, 2026

The world of kids content on YouTube is much stranger than you think. You might assume 9 years of elsagate related controversies would lead to some improvement, right?… right???

All the music in this video is made by me and can be found under the artist name NeverEndingCorridor (bandcamp linked below)

A few months ago I was with my gf's extended family. There was a young kid there, I think around 3 years old. Her parents, unfortunately, would hand her an ipad whenever she wanted entertainment. Once, I was sitting there and I was a little distracted and I looked over and the kid was watching this stop-motion video zoomed into a person's head. Then this creepy black claymation doll crawled up the person's neck and into their mouth. The person started very visibly choking and holding their neck. Then, after a few long seconds of this, the person morphed into a horrible demon/goblin thing that had all-black skin, big circular pitch black eyes, and an evil/angry expression. I immediately took the tablet away despite me not being the child's parent, because that was just a horrifying sight to me. It wasn't the video that was horrifying to me. What was scariest to me was this: The kid didn't show any fear at all, not even flinching or showing any reaction. She was just completely absorbed in it. Then when I took the tablet away she became extremely upset and started crying and throwing a big fit. I gave it to the mother to show her what her kid is watching. The mother's response? She said "oh yeah, that's not good", switched it over to the youtube kids app, and gave it back to her kid. There was still some…. "strange" stuff on there too, but it wasn't as bad thankfully. I spent the next several minutes just sitting there in a sort of daze like "wtf is going on…. is this what modern parenting is?". I continued keeping an eye on the kid and I noticed something else: the kid got bored of the youtube kids app, closed it, and went back over to the regular youtube app. I took it away and gave it to her mother again, and the same casual thing happened. The thing is, this mother clearly loves her kid normally. I know her and I know she's not normally just a "neglectful one". It's just in this particular instance it wasn't alarming to her. And THAT is what scared me. The fact that this is just a regular tuesday for both the kid and the mother, the kid casually consuming horrible content at age THREE, which is an age a kid can barely even form coherent sentences, and the mother not even caring. Even now just remembering back makes me feel grossed out that this is modern parenting. Who knows what that kid is gonna grow up to be like…. I hope she can become normal at least. Unfortunately the best solution I have to this problem is to not allow my child to own a device or use one unattended until at least 13 years old, when I'm a parent some day.

Well the content on YT now is certainly safer than it was more than a decade ago. I remember seeing a video of a dog getting run over by it's owner (they did it on purpose) and the dog was seizing out afterwards, blood visible. That was on YouTube in the early 2010's when I was a kid and I remember that pretty clearly. There was another video of an animal getting skinned alive and that was pretty disturbing. Tons of stuff like that on YT in the early 2010's.

I think what also screwed this up is the rise of ai. I remember when I was little and used youtube kids there were some odd stuff but it was mainly good. I looked at my cousin's son's youtube kids account before when he was asking for me to search for a video and there was a lot of ai on it.

I recall back then I had seen a kid who talked about Killing himself and made videos about actually planing it out or talking about it. Never seen the video again I hope hes okay..

I want to talk about another problem: the inability to comment on content intended for children on YouTube. I understand that this is safer for children, but I don't know if the channel owner is doing this themselves or if YouTube is doing it but sometimes videos that aren't actually child content, or that appeal to adults as well, are categorized as "for children only" and their comments are disabled. I can't read or comment on them. I think YouTube Kids shouldn't exist. If you want to keep your children away from harmful content, you should keep them away from phones and tablets at a young age. Or, instead of letting them watch unknown, unhelpful content on their phones, you should let them watch more educational cartoons on television. My English isn't good, but I hope you understand what I mean.

Call it a marketing shill of a solution, but I feel like Youtube Kids should be handpicked channels. And not just "any handpicked" channels, but established brands, things like Sesame Street, Arthur, or companies like Cartoon Network and the lot. You know, the MAJOR kids show makers, who've already made shows under heavy regulations.

Instead of "letting any old yahoo" to make "kids content". At least that way you know who's making what.

Honestly I’m so glad I found my way to “creepypasta nyan cat and sonic” side of the 2010 internet rather than “kids content where Elsa gets her limbs torn off” side of YouTube 🥹
