Head: How To Break A Boy Band in Just 80 Minutes|Vinyl Monday

When you see the end in sight, the beginning may arrive.
Welcome (or welcome back) to Vinyl Monday! This is my weekly series where I give the who/what/when/where/why and how I feel about classic albums in my collection. To celebrate the 100th episode, here is an ode to the original Vinyl Monday Roll Transition theme, that which I used for over half this show’s history: Circle Sky by The Monkees.
My thoughts on The Monkees’ baffling big-screen effort Head (released 1968,) plus a review of its soundtrack. Subscribe for more Vinyl Monday and vintage fashion!

This lp stunk. They were offered another season of the television show. They should’ve taken it. Because the minute it was canceled, their career was over. The next TV special no one watched. No one went to the movie, which took forever for it to come out. The album didn’t sell. They were finished.they did it. They finished themselves.

I dropped 40 bucks on a copy at a used record store in 1977. Had never seen a copy prior to that. It was in pristine shape and I really enjoyed it.

The Monkees were trying to "kill Off" their manufactured image in this film.

Just watched this movie again about 2 weeks ago. Didn't know there was an album. Good assessment.

Believe it or not, they showed this on Saturday kid's TV one time. Me and my brother and sister (all big Monkees fans) watched open-mouthed!

I saw Head once… That was enough….

By the way the Monkees weren't a boy band. Mike and Peter were 24 and Mickey and Davy were 21 when the show began.

Your copy of Head has a hole through the cover which means it's a promotional copy that was distributed to radio stations before the album was released, so it's an original 1968 promo copy.

I saw the movie in 1968 when i was 10 years old at a theater. I didn't quite get a lot of it aside from that it was brilliantly edited & the songs & images are great. It's my all time favorite movie from anyone. I have seen it well over 100 times since in theaters & at home & it becomes apparent the more times you watch it what is really going on. If you just watch the trailers you get an idea of the partial intent. Each "vignette" means or lampoons something in Monkees or Hollywood lore. Even the "trippy", " far out" stuff means something. Also, you cannot start watching the movie anywhere in the movie & go around from there. The movie is a circle. It starts at the beginning & ends at the beginning. You must watch it right from the start right to the start & right down to the last laugh.& who got the last laugh?

"Head", it's like all the strangest moments from "F.R.I.E.N.D.S" put into a blender, with Ross as Mike, Chandler as Mikey, Joey as Davy… And Phoebe as Peter. Something is going on here, and I guess it somehow makes sense…. 😉

if you want even more monkee/CSNY weirdness, check out the back of "Buffalo Springfield Again" – the monkees are listed there. as one entity. mickymikeydavypeter.

Re-watching this – I love that sometimes a Vinyl Monday can turn into Abby having a slight existential crisis. (I don’t actually “love” it, but that’s not as funny)

I've been watching this movie since the mid-1990s. I love it. But then I love Avant-Garde structualist films like Michael Snow's Wavelength (1967) or Jack Chambers' Hart Of London (1970). The film coudln't care about narrative the same the avant-garde didn't. It's why it was popular with film school types that helped build its "cult" status.

If we're going for any Beatles parallels Magical Mystery Tour was similarly criticised for plotlessness and poorly received and marked the beginning of the decline in the Beatles machine that lead to them breaking up.

I never took the Monkees seriously until I heard Ditty Diego/War Chant playing at a used record store. Their willingness to take the mickey out of themselves made me realize there was more than syrupy 45s, and I dug into their albums.

"Magnolia Simms or a Paul McCartney granny song." What do you mean? Magnolia Simms IS a Paul McCartney granny song, just written by Mike Nesmith.
