Gina Birch Announces New Album Trouble, Shares Empowering Single “Causing Trouble Again”

Post-punk icon and co-founder of The Raincoats, Gina Birch, is back with a thrilling announcement: her new solo album, Trouble, set to drop on July 11 via Third Man Records. To whet our appetites, Birch has unveiled the lead single “Causing Trouble Again,” accompanied by a stunning music video that celebrates a collective of female artists.

This album marks Birch’s second solo venture, following I Play My Bass Loud, released in 2023. With Trouble, Birch promises an audacious fusion of genres—post-punk, dub, and experimental rock—crafted with the expertise of Killing Joke’s Youth, who produced the record, along with engineer Michael Rendall.

In a heartfelt statement, Birch elaborated on the album’s title, drawing connections to her own life experiences. “The record title refers to all the mini revolutions that have occurred in my life, not following the usual paths… trouble I’ve caused and trouble I’m in,” she revealed. It’s a sentiment that strikes a chord, particularly for those grappling with societal expectations.

The lead single, “Causing Trouble Again,” is a six-minute homage to the fierce female icons who inspire her. Drawing inspiration from the feminist art exhibition "Women in Revolt!" at Tate Britain—where Birch’s short film 3-Minute Scream was featured—the track resonates with both historical and personal significance. The song features contributions from legendary artist Cosey Fanni Tutti and writer/painter Caroline Coon, who chant the names of influential women in their lives.

Visually, the music video takes cues from Bob Dylan’s nod to Jacob’s Ladder in “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” showcasing a tapestry of creative female talent. Among them is Ana De Silva, Birch’s longtime collaborator from The Raincoats, adding an extra layer of nostalgia to this composition.

This summer, fans can expect to see Birch live as she hits the road in support of the Miki Berenyi Trio for their North American tour. Birch will be joined by talented musicians Marie Merlet and Jenny Green, who contributed co-writing efforts to Trouble.

In true Birch fashion, the album encapsulates the spirit of rebellion and creativity, promising a rich listening experience. With tracks like “I Thought I’d Live Forever,” “Doom Monger,” and “Sleep” (a digital-only bonus), Trouble is poised to amplify the strong feminist narrative that has been a cornerstone of her career.
