“Don’t Touch Her” — The $400 Meet-And-Greet Disaster

Guitar Meets Science | September 13, 2026

Avril Lavigne, the Canadian pop-punk sensation, shocked the music industry in the early 2000s when her carefully crafted image of the “authentic” skater rebel began to unravel under accusations of studio manufacture. From her meteoric rise with the 20-million-selling album Let Go to the bitter public feuds with her own producers, The Matrix, we explore the controversies that threatened her status as a DIY artist. We’ll uncover the truth behind the “Complicated” songwriting credits, the federal copyright lawsuit over “Girlfriend” brought by The Rubinoos, and the bizarre conspiracy theories that claimed she had been replaced by a body double named Melissa. The story spans from her small-town discovery in Napanee to the infamous $400 “no-touch” meet-and-greets that alienated her most loyal fans. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

Years ago…a friend and I used to hang out outside a hotel where all the acts stayed at during a nearby music festival. We did this every year for about 5 years. We met everyone from Alice Cooper to ZZ Top.
I couldn’t imagine spending money to meet your favourite bands or artists

I'm a fan. I had a huge crush on her at 18. She's my age. I was into pop punk. She was perfect. Stunning looking face. "Oh she thinks she's punk but she isn't bla bla bla…" Whatever, she's good looking, sings catchy songs, is extremely talented and seems intelligent. If she's a bitch, it only makes her more appealing coz I'm into that. Gimme.

PAY to meet celebrities? That's how Norman Reedus from Walking Dead, and Stephen Arnell from Arrow got flithy rich. Every time there was a convention, they charged minimum $15 per pic and autograph, and bragged about the sacks of cash. Not their fault, its the suckers who paid for the "service". But $400 is brain-exploding ridiculous.

I saw an interview and performance she did on some t.v. show and during the performance she was doing coordinated dance moves. Her idea? Her label's? Manufactured pop star on full display.

I had a chance to attend a meet and greet at Denver in 2019. At the event, they had arranged a row of folding tables that formed a barricade between her entourage and her fans. She arrived in a hoodie sweatshirt and sat behind the tables. The room was filled with fans, some of whom told stories about how far they had come to see the show, how much they loved her, how big fans they were. Avril never said anything more than, "Uh huh. Thanks. Cool." She never touched anything they handed her. Her crew made the fans set photos on the table, the crew member would slide it toward Avril and hold it steady. Avril would swipe a sloppy scrawl on the photo, then the crew member would slide it back. She never engaged, kept the hood on, never talked to anyone beyond a one-word response, barely even looked at any of her fans. I've met people who are devoted to her fans, people like Ronnie James Dio, Sammy Hagar, Zakk Wylde, Joe Satriani, Alice Cooper, Rudy Sarzo, Deana Carter. Seeing Lavigne's apathy and disdain was disgusting. I was a fan. WAS. Now, I think she's shit. I still like her songs, but I'll always bootleg her music and buy second-hand so that she doesn't make a penny and the sale doesn't get recorded on the charts. The fans are the reason she's where she is… or was. She's a fading star. Based on her treatment of her fans, she never deserved stardom in the first place. I was looking forward to meeting her, but after seeing her act, I thought, "Screw this broad. She sucks."

As someone who was a tween obsessed with Avril Lavigne but didn't have regular access to the internet until the "Girlfriend" era, I missed out on the earlier accusations of plagiarism. I was more into the arguing about why she changed her style so much between her albums and not being sure what happened (makes sense in hindsight, since teenagers grow up, and her teams were changing, so of course there would be a lot of changes). But I do remember the controversy about Girlfriend, and talking about it with my dad, and he was surprised she wasn't getting called out for also ripping off the Rolling Stones "Get off of my cloud" (Hey, hey, you, you, get off of my cloud), which predates the 70s song.

What's funny is I was in high-school in 2005 and after those first few songs came out and Avril got super famous. I never heard about her again after that first album. Her most famous songs are still those first songs on her first album.

A guy approaching a sixteen year old girl in a book store and offering to make her a huge pop star sets off so many alarms in my head. Funny that he seemed to be on the up and up and actually the victim after he delivered on his promises.

Her first record label didn't know what to do with her because she didn't want to sing country music. She refused to do what they told her to do. That takes balls. That makes her a legend.

Plot twist: the original and only Avril was a transformed clone of Axl Rose. But seriously, why does the industry pass over real, developed talent to waste time on someone who doesn't have talent and doesn't even know what she wants to be? They shopped genres, shipped her to CA, shopped around some more… WTF. Seems like she should have been gone in the first 5 minutes. And anyone that believes some lone teenaged girl is writing every note of these polished blockbusting bangers probably stuck their arm out the car window in a convenience store parking lot to get injected with a hot batch jab for a Krappy Kreme donut. Gullible idiots. You really piss me off, Butthead. Not you specifically, your stories. You give my authentic, industry currated pop punk rage a direction. Watch you back. The CIA may be coming for you. You've become too powerful.

I remember when people singing into microphones were artists and not fabricated, no talent non-musician personal brands who are simply “discovered” because of their looks.
