just know that not everyone who breathes through their mouth does so by choice, anything that causes nasal congestion or blockages can make it literally impossible to breathe through the nose

Hopefully it's at least ok to mouth breathe when you are training and out of breath because there's no way around that

I absolutely HATE having to breathe through my mouth. When allergies or a cold gets me I'll sleep sitting up so I don't mouth breathe. It messes up a lot of things and it causes terrible cotton mouth and allows bacteria to grow rampant in the mouth. I had severe asthma and I was taught to breathe in my nose and out the mouth. Swimming free style helps with learning to breath with more control. I recommend it for anyone who has asthma. I haven't had to use an inhaler since high school, I am 36 now.

Lab coat may not be required, but a high school education mght be. Breathing is controlled autonomically ( look that one up , genius ). Breathing is controlled by blood , blood blow, , blood pH and and primarily ( in normal persons ) by the CO2 content in your blood. Which pipe ( Mouth or nor the air pases through is irrelevant to your overall cardiovaculatr condidition . Yes, chronic mouth breathers have more dental cavities, dry mouth and bad breath. However, the usual rate and depth of breath and thus gas ( oxygen-CO2 ) exchange maintains your blood pH , and proper cardiac function. The difference between inhalation and exhalation is due to the interaction of the diaphram and the elasticity ( compliance ) of your lungs.
If you try to "control" your breathing , you could do so for about 5 minutes, then the central nervous system will take over and you will either become very uncomfortable or , if you can't breath as you are designed, you will be in big trouble and end up on a mechanical ventillator.

I trained myself to take deep abdominal breaths permanently as a teen, and I've always been a nose-breather. My respiratory rate always get flagged as too low.

Holding your breath while exercising is so freaking hard
@NATESOR
October 24, 2024 at 12:19 am
yeah know, about 2 years ago i watched a video that talked about how its better to be exclusively nasal breathing. Even during intense exercising. So I tried it. Ended up with a sinus headache for 3 days. I'm gonna keep breathing through my mouth and nose while exercising, thanks. (But also, isn't hyperventaliation a symptom of anxiety? You make it sound like hyperventaliation is causing all those other symptoms, when it's just fun partner to all of them!)

Had an anxiety attack last night and deep rhythmic breathing worked a charm. Rubbing the neck to stimulate the Vagus nerve helped as well and felt good! Lotta tricks in the arsenal but, breathing is by far so much more effective.
Heard nose breathing also helps with nitric oxidide production so yeah 🍆

My epiphany was when i realized that we dont breath in oxygen and breath out co2. We breath in and out a mixture of both to maintain a certain concentration of both in the bloodstream.

3 things here. Great content. Easy to watch. Didn't ask me to like and subscribe so I liked and subscribed. All that being said I can't exactly do this breathing. When I get shitty powerful anxiety attacks I can't breath. Rather I feel like I can't breath or like I "forgot" how to breath. I'm going to try this exercise when I'm not having attacks with hopes that it may help me not get them. BTW I know I'm a ridiculous mouth breather as I always have dry mouth. Sorry one other thing, I quit smoking just after 33 years of smoking. Not sure my lungs have started regenerating yet but I shall see. This probably won't get read as this is an old video but thought I should add to the comments.

That's all well and good, but my nose is half busted. It's usually clogged. And I've been dealing with this breathing issue for years. I guess I'll have to get surgery because just re-training my breathing is not going to be enough. Thanks for the explanation though because when the therapist suggested hyperventilation syndrome, she didn't explain it well enough for me to believe her. Two thumbs up!

If you've ever had Covid, you may find this helpful. My wife is concerned that I don't breathe enough while I sleep. She says that I literally stop breathing for a concerningly long time and suddenly I take in a sharp and deep breath. I'm like… "I'm fine, sweetie… I'm alright."

The reason for controlling your breathing increasing endurance is, if you breathe fast it tells your body to enter fight or flight mode…. hence the anxiety, cold palms, excess sweat.. ect. Those are all the effects of adrenalin. By holding our breathe while we exercise, we tell our body (particularly the heart) to stay inbetween fight and flight or rest and digest. You can slow your heart rate at any time by simply breathing out longer than you inhale. The opposite also happens. Another benefit to nose breathing is nitrous oxide production.

Interesting that this is starting to become common knowledge. The first science on this came from and doctor and scientist Konstantin Buteyko, originally Ukrainian but moved to Russia where he conducted his studies. Another interesting fact is that in Russia there were countless fasting-clinics during the Soviet era, funded by the state. It was seen as one of the best medicines known to man. Ofcourse, a lot of western doctors are sceptical to fasting, at least officially. Why, we may wonder..?

Oh wow! I never realized there were so many people habitually breathing through the mouth! It seems so unnatural to me that I had to do a little experiment (since the only times i breathe through the mouth are after I've had a serious unexpected sprint). It's so weird though… I can't imagine what could make anyone switch from nose breathing to mouth breathing, so I'm still mind blown that there are so many mouth breathers out there. I imagine it must have started with some medical problem that forced them to breathe through the mouth for a long time. Maybe allergies that give constant stuffy nose?!

I'll just come out and say it…..If someone told me, a late middle aged white feller from the UK, that this morning I would stumble on a YT channel of a switched on young American black man giving me well informed health advice I'd have quietly thought "yeah more chance of me running naked down the middle of the road where I live".
I'd best start getting stripped off now…. and its bloody cold outside.
Great channel, and a great role model, feller.

I'm learning so much stuff about "my basic model" from finding your channel. This video caused me to wonder how The Bends happens (ie, coming up from deep diving too fast) – I've never been scuba diving, but that intrigues me, how the gases related to that diving problem may (or not) be affected by the O2 vs CO2 ratio. I'm not going diving, but – still curious.
