Deadmau5 Apologizes for Blacking Out During Coachella Set

In a memorable turn of events at this year’s Coachella, electronic dance music heavyweight Deadmau5—known to friends and fans as Joel Zimmerman—optimistically stepped onto the Quasar stage under his techno alias Testpilot, only to find himself losing track of not just time, but reality itself.

The highly anticipated performance, billed as a back-to-back set with fellow artist Zhu, quickly spiraled into chaos as Zimmerman apparently partook in one too many shots before and during his set. Fans and festivalgoers watched in disbelief as the producer struggled through powerful mixes, slurred his speech, and inevitably succumbed to the effects of a wild night, ultimately requiring assistance to exit the stage before the set had come to its scheduled end.

In a candid Instagram post the next day, he reflected on the incident with a mix of humor and remorse: “I don’t remember a thing. But I don’t think I had a cig? So… that’s good I guess? Going back to bed. Wake me up around Thursday ish.” His self-deprecating humor didn’t stop there; he quipped that this might well be “my last Coachella” while sharing a snapshot of a water bottle—a humorous nod to hydration amid hangover signs.

Soon after, in what seemed to be an attempt at penance, Deadmau5 took to Instagram again to share a picture of his ever-disappointed feline companion. “Man, even my cat is disappointed in me,” he penned, acknowledging the mixed feelings surrounding the performance. “Tho, it could be argued that she always has been. Sorry about last night. Lol. TO BE FAIR, I felt the first 3/4 was great!”

Zimmerman not only thanked Zhu for his support, joking about how the fellow artist introduced him to whisky, but he also vowed to reflect on his choices, promising to “do some f**kin’ personal resetting here at home, find my spirit animal, [and] work on some new music.”

Online, clips of the performance circulated, capturing the surreal moments of a set turned upside down. TikTok users readily joined in, posting videos of Deadmau5 being hilariously removed from the stage, transformed from maestro to meme in just a matter of moments. Some users described the set as “a good time” despite its unexpected outcome, demonstrating the dichotomy of chaos and entertainment that often defines festival culture.

As Coachella wrapped up its second weekend, attendees had plenty to talk about—and no doubt Deadmau5’s escapade will remain a legendary tale of the festival, illustrating the highs and lows of live performance in the electronic music scene. Fans and industry peers alike will be watching closely; will this infamous performance lead to a much-needed personal reset for one of EDM’s biggest icons? Only time will tell, but for now, Deadmau5 is taking the lessons from a wild night in the desert, nursing both his hangover and his next creative endeavor.
