David Gilmour & How he TROLLED Roger Waters in 1984

David Gilmour’s second album ‘About Face’ has quite a few digs at his former band mate. Let’s take a look at those in this discussion of this often ignored album

Waters was the idea man and David was the music that those ideas lived in. You need both of them really. As per usual the thing which makes Waters such a genius is the same thing that makes him act like an ass sometimes.

I've always loved that album.

I think it was an album of its time—the 1980s. He was really pointing in a different direction. Bringing in a legend of a bass player in Palladino—now that was the real dig. Roger was nowhere close to David's skill level, and it was awesome that they collaborated.

I used to be so peed off at Roger for causing the split of Pink Floyd. But as I grow older it's David I despise. All the rhetoric about how PF like when he answers "who?" in interviews, then he goes on to play half of his live sets with PF tunes. Including those written with Roger. And he knows that if he didn't play those songs, 80% of the people wouldn't turn up. His solo work is about as good as Rogers (ie. not very) with the exception of a song or two (like Between Two Points or Theres no way out of here). He's riding the back of Pink Floyd and still continues to try act morally superior. And don't get me started on Endless River cashing in on the name….

Why should Gilmour or Wright contribute when Waters is going to take all the credit anyway?

What nonsense…..honestly, Waters is a genius songwriter/ lyricist, Gilmour WAS agreat singer guitarist but was never a songwriter ask Jon Carin he knows………..Blue Light anyone

I think the chorus on You Know I’m Right is as beautiful as anything ever written by Gilmour or Waters.

David Gilmour openly admits he can't write lyrics. I believe he wrote nearly none of the lyrics on this album, and everything you are reading a stab at Roger Waters into is purely coincidence.
Gilmour's first two albums are much better than his most recent two albums, and it's a shame he doesn't realize that and play what we want to hear live. his recent setlist is polluted with a shit ton of Pink Floyd, which is bullshit, because I want to hear David Gilmour songs, not a band he was once in

I’m so glad you featured this album, which I absolutely LOVE. I was fortunate enough to see him play in live during his solo tour, which included many songs from his marvelous debut, too. Mihalis live! 😍 a sadly forgotten album, including by Gilmour himself.

I enjoyed About Face, but I only have it on vinyl. While I enjoyed it very much, I have listened to it for years. I need to hear it again.

Cruise was actually about the ground launched cruise missile (not a ballistic missile), which is also kind of a troll of Waters.

The whole concept of 'Trolling' is childish. Childish antagonists mated with childish protags. For the sake of humanity, please evolve. Without Waters, there is no recognizable Gilmour.

I came upon Pink Floyd with See Emily Play ❤. I could be the only preson on Earth who thinks the epic sounds if the Wall and Dark Side would have been better served without the narcissistic droolings of Roger. Perhaps a more nuanced poet such as myself 🎉.

In the 17 years that I had this album I never thought about the cover as a dig at Roger Waters. Interesting observation about the cover and I do prefer this album over Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking.

People read whatever they want in a lyric. For the song You Know I’m Right; I simply think of my own family when we argue about politics and religion. I never thought about any of the things that this man is talking about regarding any of these songs. I’ve certainly enjoyed listening to Gilmour solo recordings much more than a Waters solo recording. To each their own. Perhaps I’m too shallow to be able to dig so deep into a lyric.

Dave was having issues with Roger before this and If you listen to Dave's first album's track *No Way" you may get a hint at some turmoil…

My first cd was DG ‘78 solo album. Prior to that was Ozzy Osborne. Guitar was a prime driver.

I bought the album when it came out and still enjoy it. It’s held up well. I was unaware the friction between Roger and David at the time or the references to it in the songs.

I saw Roger Waters on that solo tour. (The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking) A very memorable and enjoyable show in fact. It contained a small tribute to Syd Barrett and had an intimate intermission in the middle where the audience was allowed to walk up to a podium with a microphone and ask him questions. Up on the list of better shows that I've seen in my life, actually.
