Daniel Dae Kim – “Yellow Face” | The Daily Show

The Daily Show | October 26, 2024

Actor Daniel Dae Kim sits down with Ronny Chieng to discuss his role in new Broadway play “Yellow Face.” They talk about meta aspects of the show — which is based on true events and stars Kim as playwright David Henry Hwang who accidentally casts a white actor for an Asian part — as well as its relevance in present-day Hollywood, and the importance of Asian performers playing Asian characters. #DailyShow #DanielDaeKim #Broadway

Felt like this segment was Ronny giving DDK his much-deserved flowers. Amongst all the shady, problematic figures of Hollywood, performers like these two are a breath of fresh air

Great interview.. I so want to see the play. It brings to mind Joseph Wiseman as Dr. No.. btw I thought it was wild seeing Daniel Dae Kim walking around Times Square and no one really recognizing or greeting him.. I guess that's common in NYC. Gotta see this show now.. the title seems almost insulting and controversial, but i suppose that is the point to effect change..I want to watch at least 2 Broadway shows a week if I could.. Best wishes! Yes cast Asians as Asians. There are many "Dragons" that are hidden and "Tigers" who are crouching out there waiting for their opportunity to shine or do their craft.. esp if it fits and elevates the intentions of the source material.. fyi: when I used to audition for roles.. I was usually profiled as soon as I walked in the door, not to be even considered for a part. Bruce Lee was definitely, my hero and inspiration as well.. im wondering how much more impact would he have had had he lived longer to make more movies.. nwy, Thanku for using ur platform to make a difference in the arts..

Agree re ethnicity nuances: very irritating when an English actor portrays Irish character; or an Irish actor is misidentified as English BY the English media. It matters to each of us especially if once marginalized or occupied by colonial forces. IMHO

I'm a huge fan of Asian dramas – especially Korean, Japanese and Chinese. The majority of the lead actors (male and female) have very white skin and more Western features, whereas the minor role actors do not. Sometimes this is talked about in the actual dramas, especially in the case of double eyelids. The plastic surgery ie eyes, noses etc are more acknowledged in Korean dramas, but in a satirical way- people who do have surgery are made fun of. In Japanese anime the majority of characters depicted don't have Asian features, the ones who do are usually comical characters. So just who's at fault here?

The origin of the argument is not that actors cannot play roles from different races. It's that (1) whites were playing Native and Black and Asian people at a time when Native, Black and Asian actors could not get work, and (2) all-white cast and crew making films about racial minorities tended to result in excruciatingly bad, racist portrayals. So when (1) racial minorities have proportional job opportunities in acting and (2) portrayals of racial minorities are honest, nuanced and responsible, there will be no intrinsic problem with trans-racial casting.
