I was 8 when this album came out and a huge fan of boxing. As such I played “Hurricane” a lot, but my mother played the rest of the album. It is every bit as ingrained in me as Nashville Skyline and Blonde on Blonde. I love EmmyLou’s harmonizing and Scarlet’s violin. So, this is one of my favorite Bobby D albums.

My preferred version of “Desire” isn’t easy to recreate since ‘Rita May’ isn’t available on streaming platforms. But the version below has become one of my favorite Dylan listens. Nice Summer vibe, and something that even non-Dylan fans might dig.

    Side One
    1. Isis
    2. Mozambique
    3. One More Cup Of Coffee
    4. Abandoned Love
    5. Oh Sister

    Side Two
    1. Rita May
    2. Romance In Durango
    3. Black Diamond Bay
    4. Sara

This version takes out ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Joey’. I find ‘Joey’ pretty plodding, so cutting that one isn’t a tough call for me. ‘Hurricane’ is a really good song, and it fits in musically with the other songs on “Desire”. However, it doesn’t really fit all that well lyrically or thematically. So, while ‘Rita May’ is not as great of a song as ‘Hurricane’, it’s a fun B-side that actually slots in nicely as a replacement track. In my opinion, ‘Hurricane’ works better as a standalone single outside of the album.

Hi, Abi. In relation to your deep dive into “Desire” “Black Diamond Bay” seems to be inspired by “Victory”, a novel by Joseph Conrad. Conrad is shown on on the back of the album (near top of right hand side) I also thought “Romance in Durango” was Bob’s take on Marty Robbins’ classic; “El Paso”.

Howdy, all ! I've been listening to and loving Dylans tongue in cheek barbs for at least 50 of my 63 years. I have said it many times, Desire fluctuates in and out of the #1 spot. But , the absolutely haunting combination of Dylans harp, Scarlets violin, and Emmylou's unmatchable pipes …..yeah, i was maybe 14 when i heard this album. I know its cliché and trite, but it was a spiritual experience to my (wet behind ) ears! my fave is Isis …..nuff said. Until this point, i hadn't known that music could do that to you! Hallelujah! oh, wait that was Cohen…..

A "circus tent"? Ronnie Lane actually did it in England in 1974. No comparisons have ever been made. Methinks Dylan was thinking of Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance and The Passing Show……Ronnie even had lions and a lion tamer…..

I was a junior in high school at the time I loved this record — it sounded very fresh at the time clear different ( for Dylan). PS Planet Waves is excellent and underrated.

Lady, the quest to make Rubin Carter into a martyr was the same thing that led to the George Floyd and Rodney King riots, and got OJ off for murder.

I saw the Revue is New Orleans in 76. It was one of the high points of my concert going experience, and I have attended many. I remember Bob walking out alone and doing "Tambourine Man". Could have heard a pin drop as they say.

Oh my god! Huge Dylan fan here! Singer/songwriter myself. Started playing the open mic scene here in th village and I met Erik Frandsen here! He’s a good friend of mine! He helped Oscar Isaac learn folk songs for Inside Llewyn Davis. FANTASTIC guitar player!!! I had to rewind it when I heard you mention him.

Shame that you dont have more Japanese releases in your collection. I buy vinyl out of bins at "recycle shops" in Japan and they are nearly always in mint condition. Japanese audiophiles really know how to care for their vinyl.
