Classic Album Review | September 27, 2024

Went to see Big Big Train to see if they were as good live as they are on record, and just how were they managing without David Longdon.

As a music lover of all genres. I cannot abide and wish the fashionable trend of catawalling like Celine Dion please stop, holding onto the highest note for 5 minutes is a hazardous, a friend thought she treat me to see Dream Girls, obviously not a genuine friend, the show was absolutely migraine inducing, horrible.. why is this fashionable, it’s a travesty!

Went to Milton Keynes – – I think some of the intracacies of BBTs music were lost live and lets go for volume instead .May have been due to smaller venue. Same highlights for me as others Beneath The Mast, Telling the Bees and Love is the Light.

Great video. Confession: I dislike bands performing (esp. live) with TWO drummers. Even way back with the Doobie Brothers (pre-McDonald) or the Allman Bros Band. As a result, now decades later I've been forced to accept that there's CLEARLY some hidden benefit or formula to it and, being a spoon, I just completely missed the bus on those things are or were.

I saw them in Swindon, my first BBT gig! Had the privilege of meeting the band afterwards and thanking them for an awesome (definitely one of the best ones I've ever seen). My main regret is that I never got to see them live with David, but Alberto has done an amazing job filling the gaping hole David's passing left.

I enjoy this band a lot, but I prefer the studio versions of the songs rather than the live versions from the new album. I'm not a big fan of the audience participation bits… Everybody sing along, everybody clap along, everybody get down and boogie! I can do without that. Leave that nonsense to the Eagles and that ilk.

    Good review, though.

BBT is superb! Saw them here in the states in Rutherford, NJ back in March and most of the band was nice enough to meet and greet us and sign my program. The Likes of Us may be one of their best yet…Thanks for the review.

Top review sir. I saw them last year, and it was still hard for me without David. But, I feel they've really found their stride again, though I'll never forget David obviously. But as someone who's had a link with the band for a few years now, it's wonderful to see them on top form. By the way,it's Pete Jones here. Thanks for the shout out. 🙂 Much appreciated. I new that I was on your radar so to speak, since youmentioned The Bardic Depths a while back. I'm very glad you enjoyed my set. 🙂

Good review! I watched your review a couple of years ago of Folklore and got the album on the strength of that, great buy! Listened to it repeatedly! Wanted to try to get a vinyl copy but need a mortgage to do that! Not sure if there are any vinyl releases you know of that I missed? Again great reviews, would like to see them.

I attended the Newark concert and sorry I did not see you to say hello. It was (once more) highly emotional for me…for all intent and purpose BBT Newark is playing as close to David's home town as you can get. I thought Peter's tribute to David (Always) was so moving it brought tears to my eyes…and when I closed them I can hear some of David in Peter's voice. The set and the musicianship remains exceptional high…and they all appeared to be having a good time playing the music. I was pleased to get to say hello to Nick, Greg and Rikard…members of the band who David first introduced to me when I paid David a visit to Real World prior to their first live dates. I miss my friend and I am so pleased David's music continues to be performed. x
