For many, driverless cars represent a shining beacon of technological hope; for others, they represent yet another example of Big Tech’s all-consuming desire for total domination; for Dan Toomey, they represent a car without a driver, and that is very confusing for him.

An investigation featuring interviews with:

Sebastian Thrun, “the father of driverless cars” and founder of the project that became Waymo, among other things—smart cookie (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sebastian-thrun-59a0b273)

Kelly Waldron, data reporter for Mission Local (https://missionlocal.org/author/kellyw/)

Safe Street Rebel, activists fighting against car dominance (https://www.safestreetrebel.com/)

Barry Taranto, former board member of the SF Taxi Workers Alliance (https://www.sftwa.org/)

Sarah Kaufman, director of NYU’s Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management (https://wagner.nyu.edu/community/faculty/sarah-kaufman)

Peter Norton, transportation historian / UVA professor / author of two good books about cars you should read if you’re interested in this stuff (https://www.linkedin.com/in/pdnorton)

3:00 didn't a waymo once drive over a woman, forget it ran her over, and then continue driving, trapping her against its tires and dragging her body against the pavement for several blocks?

Cars are extremely damaging to society: deaths, injuries, time wasted in traffic, pollution, expensive infrastructure, noise, sedentariness, social isolation, urban sprawl, less public transport, dependence on oil.

16:01 "I think what's the most important thing to keep in mind is that we don't want to add to traffic that mass transit is still the most efficient way to move large numbers of people.
So subways, busses, and in a lot of ways, taxis factor in here."

Self driving cars bad, taxis not? The only difference is the driver…

Also the taxi driver's only argument is that his job disappears, so he favors having a job that serves no purpose over automating it while actively fighting against the use of self driving cars… This isn't a problem with the cars, it's a problem with living in a society that forces you to have a job but does not guarantee you can get one.

The primary problem with the cars is that it's for-profit companies fighting to be the first into the market and pushing incomplete technology out the door so they can soak up the money before other companies catch up and monopolize whole regions with politicians passing whatever legislation they need to stay in power and extract the maximum profit out of their customers with no regard for anything else.

I have never seen someone with a sense of humor that gives a feeling like jim carrey can give, but also while being different enough to still have his own style. Truly great fun. Even with all the horror
