Hey Finn, your channel(s) is one of the few I watch regularly, and I love the mix of sharing personal stuff and nuanced music related content. In one of your old vids you said it would be great to hear about who we (comment writers) are: I am a 41yr old guy from Germany with an obsession for tool in my youth (I know that’s a red flag for you, but that’s ok). I work in academia as economist. I guess the latter is why I can relate so much to your “music is a business” point of view, and this brings me to your question in this vid: If your channels are the main source of your income, then I guess you should mainly create content that your audience enjoys. Still, you also correctly point out that your audience appreciates you being very honest and passionate about the stuff you do, so I see the dilemma – your SOAD vid might not be the most genuine thing if you do not really like them. Maybe the solution is really as simple as that you also, once in a while, do some vids about the things you really care – maybe 1 out of 5 or 10, whatever -, even if you know you won’t get a lot of revenue out of this. Let the other vids finance that. Because even though you are a marketing guy, you cannot deny that a substantial part of you is also the creative type that cares about making things not entirely for money or success. It could be that these “passion vids” speak to a smaller group of your subscribers and your other vids pleases the (possibly larger) other half. Kind of: you have a diverse audience so create diverse content. Finally, if you only go for content that maximizes clicks even though you personally don’t like it I guess it will get tedious (for you) quite fast and possibly make you quit eventually. So, again, combine / mix it with stuff you love. Hope that makes sense somehow, I guess you figured out so much by yourself, but I wanted to support that and your hybrid approach to making content. Keep up the great work and do not let the shit comments bring you down. There are enough channels out there with people telling us non-stop how smart, swag or whatever they are and we cannot afford to lose channels like yours that make a difference.
PS: I loved your babymetal coverage and their collab with BMTH, even though both have a serious shortage of the Fibonacci sequence in their songs
PPS: would be great to hear your thoughts on post metal one day (Amenra, Neurosis, Isis, CoL)

I barely started to watch your content, but I enjoyed what I saw. Even if I didn’t always agree with your opinion, it was still good to see someone with a different perspective.

If it means anything, I completely get where you’re coming from. You would like to continue making videos that you want to make but you don’t know whether or not your audience would like that. At the end of the day, we have people we want to take care of and provide. Wish you the best.

Can I ask why you stopped the other channel? It may not be a number crushing channel but you do have fans. Me and my girlfriend being one of them. You haven't replied to the other channel so I'm hoping you at least reply to this.

Edit: I guess it’s already plain as day. Stop caring what strangers on the internet think. It comes off weak. I figured you would not answer and for someone that’s watched you literally everyday for years it makes me feel in different towards you. You’re sh**ting on your fans as well. As much as it pains me I’m unsubscribing

I totally understand the dilemma, first and foremost I want to say your video's are usually well put together and very enjoyable to watch. You have 600k subs and you feel pressure to keep the audience happy. I do think it's realistic to say the people making negative comments are not among those subs. If there's 600k people that like what you do, maybe it puts negative or hateful comments in a different perspective? I do think I speak for many I don't see it as going through a wiki but I'm getting what I'm expecting, a quality breakdown of the subject in the title. I do understand it gets stale dealing with topics and artists you feel no connection with which is draining. Maybe it would be an idea to shake it up a bit and start doing interviews sometimes with key people in the scenes or artists, your channel has enough exposure to try that and it might just break the slur you may feel and get you new energy as well as new content.

Converge. The answer to your problems is stamped right behind you! The only way to survive on YT long term is to find a way to align a little bit of what you want with a "lot of bit" of what your audience wants… How would you do that? Only you can cook that up… You got this, though!

i visit your channel from time to time and i have noticed that you have changed the tone of your critiques.

i was subconsciously disappointed about that.

but dude! thanks for being you

please be you, be snotty and unapologetic about your opinions!

I pray people will appreciate you for what you contribute!

You have over an half milion subscribers, that's a lot, and should say enough. Don't get so hung up if a few videos don't get that much views. If you do something in public, you got to stand strong in your shoes. I'm new over here, and I really enjoy your "wikipedia" covering all these bands from the past I know, and I'm learning what has followed when I got a bit out of the scene. It's a very valid information, and to me entertaining.

First off you're super great. Your content kicks ass and your little one is adorable (new dad gang).

Secondly it might be unrealistic as time is so finite especially with a little one at home… but can you maybe add an extra video a month? Like a passion video? Or add extra content that you love on top of what is effective for viewership etc?

Regardless sending super good vibes Finn you're amazing and pay homage to art that has touched so many of us. I'd also say your older stuff had a lot of personal connection that gave you insights people can't find on Wikipedia. That was so cool for me. But I recognized there is a finite amount of experiences for you to draw of from your life. But keep it up dude I love all of it.

    Hi Finn !

I hope you feel better, 3 months after this video came out ! In the comments I read some good ideas, proposed by some of your viewers, so I hope you won't stop your channel.

I want to tell you a few facts that might make you smiling for the least efficient option, and for the best one, convincing you to go on with your channel : you totally made me as one of your viewer and even let you a comment , which I REALLY nearly NEVER do ! other thing, you manage to keep me as a suscribed viewer though I am everything that you're not ^^ : I am a french old goth music fan, and a "true oldschool black metal" musician, zine writer, ug label owner !

Of course, I always perceived myself as a much open-minded guy, considering I also love oldschool punk like Dead Kens or the Cramps (and the Pistols etc scene !!!) as a tremendous quantity of different styles, I've never been neither a hc listener, nor a pop punk aficionado ! But I was, like you were, present and aware of those scenes living, so I like learning stuff about these, because except for their music, I simply don't (or didn't !) know their stories ! Your analysises are also just really accurate, and I feel 90 or 95% agreeing with all of them , even when you talk about black metal !

So please, don't stop your excellent channel, moreover I like your way of talking and imo, you seem to be a great person who I'd love to meet in the real world !

I hope you will continue your excellent work here, anyway, you've got a new faithful follower, who simply thinks only nice things about you and your work !

    All the best, my friend,

    Warm greetings from France !!

    Dario.

As a creator, dealing with negative comments is very draining. Its easy for someone who doesn't put themselves out there to say " ignore them" but some people do very personal attacks. I totally get it. I worked for Lamb of God the first 7 years they were signed. I saw them go from working day jobs to making music as a full time career. Its a bit different moving a hobby into a career.

be cool to hear breakdowns about different scenes from different states or even countries that we wouldn’t hear about otherwise. not sure you could even research the wyoming punk scene but it’d be cool to hear about some in the sticks stuff!

Honestly I loved the Trap Metal interview because I was the one who consistently requested that in almost very video you made before that video lol. It was honestly too ahead of its time because look what happened during the 2020's. Trap Metal/Emo rap was at its peak with suicide boys, XXX was the hottest news, and juice world was on every Facebook and twitter post. Again I was super happy that you had both someone who was in the Metal and Rap scene at the time. I never really fully agreed with you on some of the videos, but most of the videos you had the knowledge and the connections to get the facts and that is what I really appreciated. As a failed YouTube artist, my advice is to keep doing what you love. I was chasing numbers at one point and flopped while doing it. If I could go back, I would of rather flop but actually love doing the content I do. Since your wife is Vietnamese, maybe do a video about how Asians do be going hard like Americans. I know there are tons of Asians out there but love metal; not just Japanese. Maybe 5 songs that go so hard when they featured someone outside of the US; ex baby metal and BMTH. Honorable mention: when BMTH had the legendary beatboxer Rhazel in their song. Damm that was amazing!!! Maybe diescet that song and why it was such a legendary moment. Idk you always know how to put it in a video better than my comments.

I found your channel recently and I love your content. I like how positive and respectful you are towards musicians and different genres and their audience while still being able to state your prefrences. I also find myself agreeing with a lot of your thoughts on the current state of the music that you cover. You being able to talk about k-pop and linking it to emo or actually have sober thoughts on mgk's success is much more interesting than just being a closed of pure rock/punk channel. Your channel is needed and I think it could have a pretty broad appeal.
